Non functioning slide stop
« on: September 23, 2009, 05:06:08 PM »
I have recently purchased a second hand CZ85 which has problems with the slide stop. It doesn't lock back on an empty mag, and it's also impossible to lock it in the open position with no magazine in place. This is a minor annoyance, especially as it's difficult for others to see that it's unloaded when at the range (when I'm patching targets or whatever). I can push the catch up to lock, but it doesn't hold.

On inspecting the pistol closely I can see that the slide stop itself appears to have been modified to fit into the right side catch, so I presume it was originally for a CZ75. Could this be the cause of the problem?

I have heard that newer CZ85s have a different slide stop to older models like mine. What is the difference?

There is also some slight burring to the slot in the slide where the catch should grip, but it really is very minor (i.e. less than 0.5 millimetres). Should this have any influence?

Any ideas on what I can do to fix this?

Could this be the cause of the problem?   pics?  the slide stop is a fairly simple lever.  something is preventing it from going into the mating notic on the silde.

I have heard that newer CZ85s have a different slide stop to older models like mine. What is the difference?  my right slide stop broke recently and CZ told me that i have an older version due to the failure.  the part that fits into the frame was thinner on my part and the newer versions had more wall thickness.  im not sure if there was any diff in the left side part tho since i sent in my gun and if they swapped the part, i didnt know.

i would remove the slide and insert the slide stop.  verify the slide stop will freely pivot.  then go from there.

I have an old cz 85 (about 1991) and had to put a new right side slide into it.  They only had  new ones that were a little larger in diameter so had to get the gun drilled for the new one.  Also have a newer cz 85 combat that I am just waiting for a right side slide which appears to be worn out and broken.   it is 10 months old with about 3000 rounds.  Seems premature for me but I think it is warrantied.

I it was me I would just order new stops for both sides.  You may also check your mags for wear and also if they  fit properly.

Cheers

my 85 was purchased NIB around 1994 and broke a year or so ago.  CZ fixed it for free to my surprised.  3k rounds isnt alot to me, but you never know when a part will break. i was surprised mine lasted that long and i know i had alot more then 3k thru my gun, but i for one dont shoot hot loads tru my guns, so it may make a dif.

My slide stop is definitely ready for replacement now! I was shooting tonight when the right side slide stop fell off, so it looks like I'll have to buy both sides.

I've been on CZ's webshop and they only have for the CZ85B. I presume this will need some work before it will fit mine (from 1994)?

I tried using the slide stop from my buddy's Tanfoglio and it seemed to function okay (apart from only being on the left side), and that got me wondering if there were any CZ clones whose slide stops would fit? Obviously CZ would be best, but they seem to be difficult to get hold of in this country.

Call CZ and see what they say about your SR.  Im not sure when they switched over to the larger part, but it wont cost you anything to call and ask.

If you let CZ do it, you know it will be done right.  as i stated before, they did mine and i cant tell.

Well, it's still not fixed! I live in Europe and sending firearms abroad is somewhat complex for private citizens, so I took it to my local gunsmith for repair. I hadn't heard anything from them since, so went up last week to find out what was wrong. They hadn't even got the new parts yet!! I was very disappointed indeed. I told them that CZ in the Czech Republic could send the parts in 48 hours or less rather than waiting any longer for their current supplier, but that was seemingly too difficult. I ended up ordering the parts myself and should have them on Monday, so hopefully I'll be shooting again soon.

did you try calling CZ and asking for any local CZ authorized repair shops in your country?  did you ask your shop if they have worked on any CZs or if they know what a CZ is?

before you do any physical harm to your gun, stop, and take a breath.  im not sure which version slide stop you had, but they did go thru a redesign to remidy the right side slide stop.  its a tad larger in diameter so the frame has to be modded to fit the new one.  afa over here, CZ didnt have any older style so they fitted my gun to the newer style.

CALL CZ in europe and ask for assistance.  its ONLY a call away.  maybe they have an authorized repair center in your country/town/village/city or neighboring country where shipping a frame isnt a hassle.

Well it's done! Perhaps it would have been best to have it done by Cz, but they'd finished it before I managed to get back to them.

I'm very pleased to have it back in shooting condition, so it's going to the range tonight! I'm really looking forward to it.
