cz83 recoil spring
« on: December 05, 2009, 09:30:36 PM »
I've used the search feature for recoil spring alternatives for the CZ83 and seem to only find comments that Wolff doesn't make a heavier recoil spring for the CZ 83...If I missed the post please excuse this question...I notice a significant kick (compared to other 380's I've owned) with my new 380..it also tosses brass a long distance..I dug through Wolff''s web site and found they list a 14.5# spring as "standard" and a 16.5# heavier spring.  Has anyone used the 16.5# spring with standard "plinking loads" with any success?  Just in case there is any question about Wolff's offering this spring set up I've copied the item from the site...hope that's ok...here it is:

Recoil Springs

Recoil springs are available with load-rated specifications to tailor the recoil function to individual needs. A XP firing pin spring is supplied with these springs

the 16.5 and 18.5# springs are much nicer on the hand while shooting.  The 18.5# spring requires a rather assertive pull to load the chamber.  I'm using the 18.5# spring in my 82.  I can shoot 150 rounds without the web of my hand glowing red from recoil.

Are you shooting "plinking loads" like American Eagle, etc or self defense loads that are hotter like Corbon or the like?  I have used heavier springs in some other pistols with good results...I don't plan on any self defense loads in this pistol...I have other arms for that...so no "hot loads"...may get a 16 1/2# spring and give it a try...many thanks for the input.

Hello,

I use plinking loads in my 82 (Wolf, brown bear etc) and I use the 16.5 Lb spring, which softened out the snap a bit over the spring that came with the gun.  The original spring also could have been worn out, it shot the brass into the next county too.  It should be fine with .380 too.

Cheers, Eric

I went ahead and ordered a 16.5# spring for the 83..I have a bit of arthritis and don't think the 18.5 would be something I'd like to deal with on pulling the slide from what I've heard...if the recoil is just a bit less I think I'll be fine...part of the problem is that I'd shot 100 rounds of 9x18 out of my Makarov the day before....I also ordered a 19# (one step up from stock) spring for the Mak as I hear that's a really nice alteration as well...I've not really noticed much of a recoil issue with the Mak...may be the way it fits my hand.  At any rate both pistols might show just a bit less recoil and from what I read they will probably function well with what I'm doing...many thanks for the input and a couple of private messages I've gotten as well.  I'll post results later on when I get the springs and try them out.

Kerncat,

I've also noticed the same thing....my CZ-82 recoils to the point of being uncomfortable.  So, like you, I have also ordered the Wolff Srings.  If the heavier spring works out then it will really be a fun pistol to shoot.  I normally shoot .40 S&W and .45ACP without discomfort, so the sharp bark of the 9X18 Mar is a surprise!  The web of my right hand hurts after 75 rounds or so.

And, yes, I will also post my results once I get on the range and can test the difference.

;D  Well, been to the range today and got to tell you....the 16# (may be 16.5??) Wolff spring made a big difference in the way the 83 shot...Recoil was not nearly as much as with the factory spring (don't know what the # is but I think around 14#....doesn't matter much).  I also put a 1 step heavier spring (19# vs 17#) in my 9.18 Makarov and it also was a real joy to shoot.  Less recoil on both pistols (I was able to shoot a couple hundred rounds total) with no sore hand.  The cartridges stayed in my same county and both pistols cycled perfectly and no mis feeds, no mis fires, and no problems what so ever.  Well worth the small cost and the little effort.  That's my story.

Great report, Kerncat.  I bought the 18# springs from Wolff for my CZ 82s.  I finally went to the range today and had the same type of experience.  The new springs made a big difference in the felt recoil.
