Sight in and cast tryout!
« on: May 21, 2010, 12:33:04 PM »
I have this new scope, you see...

...and I wanted to get it sighted in! It didn't take long, but I did have to start at 15 yards! Boresight didn't work to well for me this time, but I had her down to 50 yards making nice little groups with the 123gr FMJ ammo. Scope is clear, bright, and easy to use, thank you!

Then, I decided it was time for my very first home cast rifle boolits...

Nothing to write home about, but it did show there is potential! The last four rounds I had made a better group,

Much better. I think I have a good beginning, can't wait to cast up more and see how well they do at 100 and 200 yards! All in all a very good beginning to the day!

Very nice.  The 7.62 is about the same ballistics as the 30/30?  I am curious and impressed about the home made bullets.  I have read that cast lead cant hold up to speeds/energy exerted in modern pistols/rifles.

I am not approaching jacketed velocities, that is true, but with the gas checks I can actually get pretty close to it. The heavier bullet also doesn't allow for much leeway in loads. I have more to try out, but everything is on hiatus until we get moved. Fortunately, the place we are moving to is on the other side of the range, so I will still be close to it. :)

Interesting.  If you feel like it, post some more targets.  I am curious how the round combined with the rifle prints at different ranges.  The rifle probably work well for a youth, lower recoil and with the less expensive ammo would afford more shooting.  Around here .270/.30 is about a $1 a round.

Sorry, with the move and such haven't made it back to the range yet, though I did get a better casting setup here. Loaded some more testers at 19.5grains AA#1680, almost to the max for that powder/bullet weight. I do have some H335 and H4895 to try out, too.
I did get some 100 yard groups last time I took her out with cast...big bullet drop with light loads. :)

Definately nothing to write home about, but once I get the power level up to where it needs to be, we'll get somewhere.

You can see the difference, 6 inch hold over above, 3 inch below.

I think we'll get there!
