cz-82 night sights
« on: April 30, 2010, 07:03:04 PM »
Not sure if its been posted before, but could somebody post a pic of their 82 with night sites. I saw on the cz-usa website that they have 2 different Meprolights for CZs. Which rear sight hight would be right for the 82. And finally, does anybody know anything about the PT sights listed?

Thanks

P.S. I've had mine for a month now and still haven't made it out to the range! I'm going nuts!

I used Testor model airplane white enamel, which makes the sights quite visible. After cleaning out old paint, I used a toothpick to fill in the original sight indentations. Results were very good.   This was the original factory treatment and costs only $1.59 plus tax.

These original sights with new bright white paint are quite visible in total darkness with a flashlight. Night sights are nice but I still will want to use a flashlight to identify what or who is in front of the pistol. I have night sights on several Glock pistols, but I'm wondering if I will bother to replace them when the tritium loses it's power.  The  CZ 82 is a great bargain and quite serviceable without modification but would be improved by night sights.... It would be interesting to see if anyone makes night sights for it.

I'm with Mountain Walker.  Having used night sights while training, I have come to the conclusion that they are a 'tacticool' gimmick.  IOW, if it is too dark to see your sights, it is too dark to see your target.  I do like white dots on my sights and have found them to be every bit as effective as tiny tritium capsules, and it costs a whole lot less.  I also believe that learning to shoot with a flashlight gives you a lot more tactical options.  I was trained in the Chapman method (Agent Dunham uses this technique in "Fringe"), and it has served me well over the years.

Thanks for responding, I was beginning to wonder if had broke some kind of unwritten rule and had been blackballed from the forum. You both have good points. I'm not crazy about the front sight being just a vertical line. I would prefer a 3 dot setup. But yes I like your ideas about model paint. I believe I will try that first.

I have only seen night sights made for the 75/85 series, with some being interchangeable with the 83/82. I'm close to them, so I would like to investigate XS sights. I like the sight picture on those. I am worried they would be too big for the pistol. We'll see, at $120 a set, that might be a while in the making.

Regardless if they fit or not, the sight situation will be secondary on the list of upgrades for the pistol. First, a new finish.

I have found sometimes while target shooting with my 82, I lose the white sights on paper, plan on going to yellow or flourescent orange this summer.

The question you may need to ask yourself is: How much do you want to invest in a $200 pistol?

For myself, I plan on keeping mine quite awhile, so I plan on investing in a new blue and maybe a set of Marschall grips, but don't want to go too far in investment.

And yes, it is currently my SD firearm.

I picked up a little vial of Bright Sights brand high visibilty gun sight coating (glow-in-the-dark yellow). I got it at a gun show for about $5 for enough to repaint the sights over 100 times. After refinishing my 82, I applied this sight paint with a toothpick and it looked pretty good. I immediately tuned off the lamp and could see the paint glow REAL well in the dark, so I put it away to dry.

Taking it back out after drying, I have a completely new opinion. In daylight this paint is horrible, b/c the color is real pale. In the dark it's horrible, b/c I don't keep the gun lying under a light to "charge" to glow paint. I also got a vial of fluorescent orange, so I tried it too. Same result...the dots on the gun just don't hold enought paint to make it any more visible than white is.

Got back from my first trip to the range today.

Holy cow batman! Is this gun accurate! Shot a 4 round group under 2 inches at 10 yards. Only problem is that it was 4 inches low and 2 inches to the left. shot a 12 round string in about 3 inches. Not bad performance.

I did notice that the rear site isn't quite dead center. Its been peened in place, so it will take some work t get it straight. Like I mentioned in a previous post, there's no paint on the sights, so they were difficult to line up straight. I will definitely be getting replacement sights.

Only other problem i noticed was the hammer did not always set back to single action with each cycle. I know it mentioned in other posts, so i'll look around and see what i can find.

rdraider, if you are still interested in night sights, take a look at the Meprolight ML17777. They are listed as being made for the 75/85 but they also fit the 82. I believe I paid around $60.00 - $70.00 for the set using my C&R discount at Midway USA. I can take some pics of mine if you like, but I may need some assistance posting the pics.

no need for that, altough i appreciate the offer. i have about decided to go a three dot route. i just need to get a very low front and high rear. have you shot your 82 with the night sights yet? if so, where does it shoot in terms of point of aim?

Thanks

Update:

Contacted CZ USA parts dept on Monday and ordered a #5 rear sight and a front dot sight from a cz83,  all for $14.00! :o ;D

While I was at it, I ordered a couple of those rubber base plates somebody else had mentioned on this forum, to see if i can improve them a little. Gun hasn't had any finish on it in about 2 months, except for a good coating of break free....No Rust what so ever! That break free is some good stuff.

I'll update once i get the new sights in and a trip to the range.

P.S. I bought a vile of that glow in the dark sight paint for $7, and it works pretty good for what i expect. A good base coat of white is essential.

Update:

Everything got in on friday. Sights from cz already have light chargeable paint on them. Rubber base plates needed slight filing to fit. They are a little tight but fit well. Taking to a friens ranch tomorrow to see shooting results!

Can you show a pic of the gun with the rubber base plates installed? I'm not familiar with them.
