I'd never heard of charging for the NICS check, but the wording on some of the above posts made me wonder if that was happening in some parts of the country. I wouldn't be surprised by almost anything these days.

It depends on which state you are in.  In my state you are hit for five dollars for a purchase of a firearm regardless whether or not it gets approved, this is by the State.  Now a pawn shop returning a pawned gun doesn't have to charge as they call a different phone number.  Sounds crazy but you know how the states like to hit people for fees.  The new purchases go to a state supplied number and the pawns go to a federally supplied number, same computer system.  It is surpising when first went into affect it was a higher price but the state was forced to drop it.  Also a lot of pawned guns were not allowed back to the person who pawned them due to background check.  One pawn broker I know even had the police come into the shop and pick up the guy wanting his firearm back, something about outstanding warrant(s).  Interesting. Our local Sheriff charges a Notary fee when he processes a handgun permit.  This is absolutely a ripoff, as his deputies are doing the processing and can verify all ID as they are processing them.

I'm glad NC lets you buy without a weapon purchase permit if you have a concealed carry license...

The whole concept of a "weapon purchase permit" makes me nauseous. I hope that communist concept never takes hold in Alaska! We're not even required to have a permit for concealed carry.

Don't forget that Rudy Guliani was all for gun control until he addressed the NRA, seeking their support.

Its not always a simple Democrat = Bad/Republican = Good when it comes to gun control issues.  (Heath Shuler, a representative here in NC is a Democrat, and very pro-gun.  There are others.)

Oh I know that Walt.  Personally I prefer Democrats to Republicans, except on some issues like guns. I really do not see much of a difference between the two as neither really represents the common man just their self-interest.  By the time the get into politics high enough to run for national office they are so corrupt they should all be jailed.

America really has a one-party system, with extremists within that party.   They seem an awful lot alike, nowadays.  The differences have more to do with the part of the country they come from than their party affiliation.

There used to be a middle, but leadership in Congress has done all it can to stifle that.

own Constitution by eroding it over time, giving more and more power to the federal government, and instituting the system many of us fought to oppose - communism/socialism.  We have members of both "parties" voting other folks money into still other folks coffers - this is how they attain and maintain power - it is draconian, but the payroll deduction plan has minimized the "feel" of the theft.  When we get to the point where a majority do not pay in, and their "party" owns their vote, it is all over - and we are very close.

What you say is probably true -- but a "federal" government with states having a lot of power and vying against a central government  just doesn't work in a modern world of powerful nation states.  As time passes, we'll necessarily (I think) see states having even less and less power.
