First 250 rnds through CZ 85 Combat

First 250 rounds through my brand new CZ 85 Combat.

The NIB CZ 85 was covered in oil (good), so I cleaned
it up, but left plenty of oil where it counts. It comes
with 2 16 rnd Mec-Gar mags. The adjustable sights are
of the three-dot type & the dots are flourescent
white - all the same color. I got the black polycoat.

Ammo: 200 rnds Blazer Brass & 50 rnds WWB.

Accuracy was good - tights groups.

Trigger was good, but had too much travel. The 85
Combat has an adjustble trigger, so I'll adjust it
later to suit my preferences. On DA it had some
sticky points that I'm sure will go away with use,
but I'll probably have a trigger job done before then.

I had 3 FTFs on the Blazer Brass. All were of
the same type: at the last couple of rounds in
the mag and it just literally took a tap on the back
of the slide to feed in.

I also noticed at least a dozen "lazy" cycles where
the slide operated slow enough to notice it closing/feeding.
This bothered me at is seems that it would hamper rapid-fire
sequences. Is this indicative of a weak main spring?

The only adjustment on the 85 Combat is overtravel.  That's not going to help with trigger travel/take up...

You're dealing with a fundamental design characteristic of the CZ.  The only way around it is to convert it to a Single Action ONlY model... with a two-way adjustable trigger.   Then you can take out a lot of the slack.  (A good gunsmith, familiar with the design, can get even more of the slack out.  Jim Miossi, here, has written several messages recently, about what's involved.  Not just any gunsmith is going to do much.)

Well, put another 250 rounds through it (500 total thus far - day 1). Had 3 more FTFs on REM UMC ammo. Won't be buying that ammo again. It was fully 3-4 mm shorter end-to-end than all the other ammo I have. I'll have to take pics and post 'em up.

Well, I had enough rounds in it to break it down and see how things were working. Did the following:

1. Adjusted the over travel stop. It had way too much over travel.

2. Ground off all the edges on the trigger. It's nice, rounded and very smooth now.

3. Deburred the frame rails - got 'em nice and smooth.

4. Re-machined the feed ramp on the barrel. There was too much bullet/ramp contact. It now has a broader/flatter ramp.
Also totally deburred chamber entrance, and polished ramp/entrance.

5. Filed down the punched serial # / CZ mark on the barrel. It was obvious by the shiny appearance that they were high spots. Took off about 5 thou.

6. Re-blued barrel.

7. Changed seer ramp angle a tad to get rid of the pressure spike in SA trigger action toward end of pull.

8. "Adjusted" the trigger return spring for less pressure.

9. Cleaned out all OEM heavy oil, re-oiled and she's GTG.

SA trigger pull is bleep near telepathic now. DA is high-quality revolver like.

And to think this was just day 1. LOL

I'll be at the range soon and will report back.

That was one busy day ..! :D

Every time I shoot mine I like it more.

About 4000 rounds through it so far and no problems. The only thing I did apart from the usual cleaning and such was to buff any tool marks off the feed ramp.

I have noticed that with dirty/sooty ammo, the top of the mag  follower and mag builds up a good layer of carbon. I would think if it was left unattended It might cause feed problems eventually.

To prevent that , I strip and clean the mags about every 500 rounds. Possibly a waste of time , but it makes me happy ..

Good luck with your new purchase .

5252:

You sure are a busy guy with your 85C.  What size Allen wrench did you use to adjust the overtravel?

All I did with mine was dryfire with a snap cap, shoot about 4k rounds through it, and send it to Angus for a trigger job.

The more you shot it, the more you'll like it.
