??Recoil spring guide for CZ85 COMBAT???
« on: May 14, 2002, 01:02:59 PM »
I want to change my plastic guide for one in metal.
Does anyone know if it is a good idea?
any good places?
Is it the same as CZ 75?

Why?

Have you heard of one breaking or somehow degrading performance?   Ever?

(This topic comes up a lot on the SIG Forum, where folks think metal is always better than plastic...)

If you shoot IDPA, making the change may disqualify your gun from the Stock Service Pistol class.

Until I see a reason to change, my 85 Combat will continue to use the stock plastic guide.  I've probably got 7,000 rounds through it, now, with no evidence of problems.

The only part I've replaced on mine -- except for the sear and disconnector after a too-agressive trigger job (our fault -- my gunsmith and I -- and not the gun's) has been the recoil spring.  I replaced it around 5,000 rounds as a precaution.  (That seems to be the number of rounds recommended by most gun makers for replacing the recoil spring.)  I went to a 16 lb spring from Wolfe.

This was done as a different sort of precaution too.  I had talked with the CZ gunsmith about the "rumor" of slide stops breaking, and he said it wasn't a problem -- but if I was concerned, a stronger recoil spring made more sense than a spare slide stop.  He recommended the Wolfe 16 pounder over the CZ spring.

Its harder to rack the slide now, but it shoots fine.
