85 Combat Purchase review

All,
I am a new member, I have been doing some lurking though. I would like to add my thoughts concerning my new 85 combat.

First, I am a southpaw. The 85 was the model I needed. The reason I chose the Combat was the additional mag, the ambi controls and as my finger felt awkward on the regular model triggers (the trigger angles too far forward... does anyone else have this issue. I think I have big hands also.) the adjustable trigger. Plus the dual tone finish.
Took it to the range. at the 25 line I fired a clip from my FEG HP clone, then started with the CZ. Some initial thoughts.
Clip is tight to load, but loosened quickly.
Safe is perfect, I do want a decoker though.
Slide release on right side was great.
comfortable grip and trigger reach.
Heavy recoil, slippery grips, almost popped out of my hand.
So, first clip was very inacurate;. All over the place.
Put another clip in and adjusted my triger finger pressure to a slower squeze, and a tighter grip with offhand.
Better, put a few in the ten. Next clip, first 4 rounds one big hole dead center! I got excited and put 5 out of next 6 in center with the flyer just out in the nine ring. New clip, new target, better results, 10 out of 10 in the 10!!
Can you fall in love with an inanimate object.

Some afterthoughts .... Hogue Grips. Need to improve grip without tightening hands and pulling off target. Got them for $22. Cant wait to try them at range. Will let you all know what I find out. Stripping this baby was a snap. Cleaning was a breeze, nickel finish cleans up well.
I never had me a fancy gun.

I got the 85 combat because I was thinking of competing in IDPA or IPSC comps. What class would it fall in and what do you think of its abilities in the class.

I tried the Hogue "wrap-around finger groove" grips and really don't like them.

I've used them on other guns and really like them, but for some reason, the finger grooves on the 75/85 Hogue grips just don't fit my hand like they should.

If anyone wants a set, I'll sell you mine -- used for ONE range session -- for $10 (shipping included.)

The factory soft rubber grips, which I bought when I got the gun, are very, very good.  That's what I started with and that's what I'll continue to use -- having found the Hogue wraparounds wanting.

The 75 or 85 series can be shot in both Stock Service Pistol divisions (if started hammer down) and Enhanced Service Pistol division  (if starting cocked and locked) in IDPA.  I shoot in both divisions.

If you haven't already done so, go to the IDPA website and download the full manual.  (www.idpa.com).  Its a good gun; it'll shoot better than you... <grin>

I own a 85 combat and shoot IPSC right now in the production class, but because there are usually so few competitors in this class, it is more likely that you will be in the Standard Class.

I have bought hogue wrap arounds and love them.  Walt is right about the fit though.  I have large hands and my grip is tight using the grooves, but consistency of grip in quick combat is more essential to me than the feel.  Each to their own.
