Full length guide rod in a 97
« on: May 03, 2011, 10:27:42 PM »
Is anyone running a full length guide rod in a CZ 97?  Since replacing the anemic spring that came with my used 97 with a factory spring, I'm getting a lot of coiling in the dust cover.  It coils out enough to make it tough to put the slide back on at times.  It looks like a full length guide rod would eliminate the issue, but I have not seen any mention of it.  I've put around 150 rounds through the gun since swapping the spring out.

Thanks,
Tim

I have a Steve Bedair in mine:

Stainless Guide Rods

The full length guide rod can sometimes make the slide kind of hard to put back on itself too though.  :o

But, Mr. Bedair is one of the nicest guys to correspond with, and I figure I have spent $25 on lousy fast-food restaurant food in the past (that I just poop out later) that the money spent on it doesn't seem such a big deal to me.  ;D

Really what's needed is a "near" fulll length guide rod.  I have noticed a full length guide rod in a 97 tends to put the slide in a slight bind.  This is not a rod from Mr. Bedair.  I think what we need is a guide rod that just barely engages the recoil spring plug.

I'm running one of Steve's guide rods in there now but it's a short one that matches the original, but in stainless instead of plastic.  I'll check with him regarding the length of the 97b guide rod and if it's a full length rod, will order that one.  When I ordered the one I have, I had assumed that it was full length and when it came in short, figured that I need to stop assuming stuff.  Either I ordered the wrong part or he sent the wrong part but I'm inclined to think I ordered the wrong part. :-[  You're right though, $25 is not much to spend for what he sends.  I've wasted more than that at a coffee shop.

Thanks,
Tim

The one I have ends dead flush even with the opening in the recoil spring plug.  Like it was professionally drawn in place by a Japanese anime artist.  ;D

Looks really professional when you finally get it installed, like part of the original gun.  Much better fitted than some of my other firearms that came from the factory with sloppy FLGR's in them.  ::)

This is the one ordered from Steve last week :

this is what Steve says about the lenght :

"The 97B stainless rod is made to be a full length rod to fully support the spring.
At one time CZ offered a full length rod and this is how I got the measurements.
Let me know if you have any fitting problem with the full length rod.
Thank you "
Steve

I just got my full length rod from Steve the other day and I'm impressed with the work.  I cannot imagine why CZ ships a short rod on the 97, as the full length rod seems to work much smoother.  As with the other guide rod I got off of Steve, the work is excellent and the fit is perfect.  I should have a chance to try it out at the range this weekend.

I've had my 97 out a couple of times since putting the full length guide rod in and I'm very happy with it.  Not only does the pistol function very well with it, but it's also a lot easier to field strip and clean since the recoil spring does not kink and try to shoot out across the room.
