My first trip to the local range
« on: July 24, 2011, 03:34:20 AM »
I'll post a picture as soon as I can. Tonight was actually my SECOND outing to the range-- my first was last night.

It was 5pm. There was nobody there. My only experience with firearms up to that point involved plinking some empty cans with a .22LR.

So, I turned on the lights (the indoor pistol and .22 rifle ranges are open 24hrs-- we just have to clean up and turn off the lights when we leave) and set up a simple orange bullseye target. Went through 2 boxes of Remington UMC 9mm through my brand-spanking-new SP-01. To my credit, having NEVER fired this type of gun before, 95 out of 100 bullets hit the targets (which were something like 12"x16", and I put up a new target for every magazine I went through).

I relayed that info to a guy on the local shooting team this evening, when I went back, and he nodded approvingly, saying "that's good work for your first try!"

So, he had me try at 10 yards and 15 yards. Now that the "first-timer" jitters have subsided, and I have a rough idea how my gun responds to my input, I managed to get some much tighter groupings (minus a few outliers, of course). I'm curious to see if I do any better after adjusting my sights?

Well done! First concentrate on the one important thing - sight alignment. When you have that good, and are making good groups, then you can adjust the sights, but they are probably on clsoe enough for government work right now. If this buddy can give you some hands on pointers, that will help a LOT more than thousand mile advice. :) Welcome to the CZ world!

Welcome to the forum. Yep, sight alignment first, tight groupings, then adjust. Wish best at the range.

Sweet. That SP-01 is total awesomeness. I'm jealous that you have a 24 hour indoor range!

As for the sight alignment, I guess it hasn't hit me yet just how the slightest tweaks can vary the results pretty drastically.

I noticed that most of my shots were grouping under the bulls-eye, so made what I thought was a very slight adjustment, and pulled the trigger when my front sight was just a tad higher than my rear sights.

That turned out to be an over-compensation, since my shots started grouping ABOVE the bulls-eye!
