CZ Kadet Malfunction -- Fired out of Battery ??
« on: August 02, 2011, 01:07:11 AM »
Hi Guys,

I've had a CZ Kadet for about two years now, and it has quickly become one of my favorite .22lr pistols.

I was out in the woods today doing some plinking, when I fired a round and instantly felt my face get hit with a ton of
hot powder and debris. It felt almost like the gun had blown up. I set the gun down on the ground and checked myself over
to make sure I wasn't hurt. (I'm fine!) When I picked the gun back up, I didn't see any damage, but went ahead and field
stripped it just to make sure. Everything checked out fine, and I even took the gun apart again this evening for cleaning
and there is no damage anywhere.

The one thing I did notice is that all of the remaining rounds in the magazine (5 rounds) were heavily blacked with
soot/powder residue.

Any idea what type of malfunction this could have been? I know that there was NOT a barrel obstruction, as I the round I
fired immediately before the malfunction hit its target.

These are the three possibilities that come to my mind:
1. Overcharged round
2. Maybe the gun fired out of battery? (Is this possible on a Kadet?)
3. Case head separation or blow out? (I assume this can happen on a .22lr just like with a centerfire round?)

I tried to locate the spent casing to see if there was any obvious damage, but being out in the woods in tall grass I
couldn't find it.

At this point I'm just curious if any other Kadet shooters have had a similar experience. I'm not new to guns or shooting,
but this is the first malfunction of this type that I have had.

Thanks!
James

First off, I?m glad to hear you were not seriously hurt
Question?
The round chambered and then you pulled the trigger? Not a slam fire ?
Any one of your scenarios could be right, and without a case to look at, no telling
As you said, I too have had 9mm rupture at the web or blown a head clean off
.22lr rounds are very fickle animals?being a rim fire and all
Hope this was just a fluke, one time occurrence
Be safe, Shoot safe, Den S
So tell me again how Trump was worse then the 8 years before .... AND what's coming after HIM !

Hi Den,

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Yes, I did pull the trigger, so it was not a slam fire. Good question though!

The gun itself seems fine. I've fired another 60 rounds since the incident without issue.

I suspect that this is one of those incidents that will remain a mystery. I really looked for a long time trying to find the brass case, but if it was overcharged or the case head ruptured I imagine it was thrown a good distance away -- making it nearly impossible to find out in the woods.

possible some carbon, etc built up on the barrel face and left some of the case ( very small portion ) not in the barrel, enough that the hammer could drop and fire.
this can allow some debris, etc to spit back at the shooter. any chance you found the case and could see its condition?

Hello Tech,
Glad to hear you were not injured.  It sounds as though it was a defective cartridge and your subsequent firing indicates the pistol was not damaged.  The case would have gone a long way to explain what happened.
