Is this barrel toast?
« on: October 16, 2011, 10:10:55 AM »
So I traded some crap i didn't want for a 2nd cz52 yesterday that the former owner had shot a 9mm round through. I took it apart and inside the chamber is the remnant of a bullet's copper jacket, which came out with very little force. What I'm wondering is since the Tok round is so much hotter than 9mm should i be concerned with the strength of this barrel? Other then that issue this one is in MUCH nicer shape then the other one i have.

Thanks
Graham

I recognize that the smartest thing to do is to replace the barrel and I will most likely not send one down the pipe, I am simply asking if this barrel is compromised due to the lower pressure albiet larger round being fired. That said, if you do not have an answer for that question I would appreciate you not cluttering up this thread.

The only honest answer that anyone, on any forum, can give you is: "I don't know."

The fact that the bullet that stuck in the barrel was from a less powerful round than the barrel was designed to handle is meaningless.  The barrel was designed to handle the properly sized bullet to be propelled through it by a given amount of force.  It was not designed to be plugged and experience any amount of explosive pressure.

There may be stress fractures inside the metal that could cause it to rupture on the next shot . . . or a hundred or a thousand shots from now.  Only a qualified gunsmith could give you an answer . . . and I doubt any would without doing a thorough inspection  - which will probably cost as much as a new barrel.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but it is what it is.  I wish you luck with it . . . it is a sweet gun.

I wouldn't take the chance.  Perhaps swap the barrel out from your other one until you can get the $40 or whatever it costs for a replacement barrel.

You're not the only one to discover evidence that someone fired a 9mm round down your 7.62mm barrel.  While there is a chance that it is just fine, there is a larger probability that the barrel was weakened by the overpressure event.  $40 is a lot of money to me too, but I would find a way to get a new barrel.  That's cheaper than taking it to a machine shop to have it Magnafluxed.
