Can I remove just the FP safety and spring...?
« on: November 07, 2011, 08:04:38 PM »
... or do I need to remove the lifter as well?

I'll replace the lifter with a spacer as soon as they're available, but in the mean time I want to ditch the FP safety, and I'm wondering if the lifter will interfere with the slide when it cycles.

I did a trigger job and it's real nice with the slide off (I cushion the hammer fall with rubber) but the FP safety really ruins it.

I haven't removed mine, but I'm told you need the spacer.

If you polish the FP safety parts (gleaming smooth) and lighten the spring some, the 'drag' is waaay less.  .

Maybe I'll just start with that while I'm waiting for a spacer.
Thanks.

The gun should function fine if you just remove the FPB and spring, but you won't really realize the advantages of removing the FPB until you remove the lifter.  I've been told that the gun will function fine if the lifter is just removed, even without the spacer to take its place.  Alternatively, you can "make" a spacer by just cutting both the legs off the lifter.  CZCustom was sold out of the spacer last time I removed the FPB on a pistol, so I just used this latter route and lopped the legs off of the lifter.

Not sure if this a question I can ask on the thread but should this mod be done on a self defense or is this for competition

It's really more of a competition or range gun modification.  If you're planning to carry the weapon, removing a safety mechanism like this is probably not a great idea.  I don't really know whether there would be any legal implications to having modified the gun if it was used in a self-defense situation, although personally I'm doubtful that removing the FPB would matter whatsoever in that sort of legal situation.

Very legitimate question.

My CZ 75B is strictly a range/fun gun, and the Kadet conversion will be added soon, so I want identical trigger pulls for rimfire and 9mm.

On my 75's the lifter would flip up and catch in the hole left by the FPB causing the slide to jam. I cut the finger off the lifter essentially making it into its own spacer and it works great. I think if the gun were fired with the lifter in place and the FPB out that it would cause quite a bit of damage when the slide shears off the lifter. My end solution was to replace all my sears with pre-B sears, they are only $9 from cz-usa and they work great, they are wider and take up all the space in the cage thus negating the need for the spacer. I have a 2.5 lb creep free pull on my 97B with a comp hammer, and my 75B's are both measuring 3.5lbs with the lifter and FPB removed. All are converted to SAO with comp hammers with stock mainspring weights.

That was my concern.

You can also just order a pre b sear from czusa for $9 and put that in your B. It will work fine without the FPB.

Best way is to replace the sear with either a CZ-USA sear or get an adjustable one from Scmeky at Cajun GunWorks.
or cut the legs off..both the top and the bottom.

the chance you take is the the lifter will come all the way up and get snagged and cause a malfunction. somewhere someone did that and reported it flipped over and locked the gun up.

I ended up removing the FP safety and lifter. I replaced the lifter with a spacer I made from a piece of plastic. That's temporary until I can get a spacer from the custom shop. I wanted to keep all the original parts unaltered.
I lubed the rails with some lithium grease and re-assembled. The trigger is terrific and everything is just so smooth. It's got that 'Cadillac' feel to it now. I know heavy grease might cause problems with dirt accumulation, but this is just a fun gun that gets cleaned often, so why not.

Very pleased with my new CZ, should have bought one years ago.
