New Member Trying to Choose

Hey everyone,

I am brand new to the forum and recently bought my first gun, CZ 83 in 380. I was planning on getting a Kadet (not the Kadet Kit) just for range use and practice, but my dealer contacted CZ and doesn't know when he can expect a shipment of them in. So in the meantime, I am looking at 9 mm.

Side note: I am brand new to this gun thing and I plan on spending most of my time shooting at the range for practice. Carrying plays no part into this decision. And I may plan on making some modifications to the gun in the future.

I am looking at a full size CZ 75 B, 75 B Stainless, or CZ 75 SP-01.  The price of the CZ 75 B differs from the Stainless and SP-01 by about $150-200 cheaper. I already have a 380 which seems to fit in my hand great. I got a chance to hold the 75 stainless, which turned out to be a little heavy and hard to hit the slide release. What would be your best recommendation for me to get out of the 4 guns for mostly range time and practice?

Thanks for all the help!

the SP01 is heavier than the stainless 75B, the 75 B and the Kadet pistol will be of similar weight to the stainless.
if you buy any of the three you could always add a Kadet kit to the mix and have both.

For range use and learning to shoot, I believe all those pistols are excellent choices.  All are based on the same frame and will have equal to slightly MORE "weight" in the SPO1 versions.  The SPO1 additional weight is mostly up front and makes the pistol react less to recoil.

"One" of the 75B stainless versions has an upswept beavertail (as does the SPO1) that allows a slightly  higher grip which helps reduce the affect of recoil a little.

The 75Bs normally come with 16rd mags.  The SPO1s come with 18 rd mags. (actually hold 19 usually).  The mags are interchangeable for all the pistols you listed.

I shoot the 75B and find it to be very accurate and reliable.  My son shoots an SPO1 Shadow and likes it better than my 75B.  I like the "B" better.
It's your preferrence that matters.

The Phantom is the newer polymer version of the SPO1.  It is lighter than the all steel pistols if that is an issue.  All the Phantom owners can't say enough about how well the pistol shoots and feels.  It makes an excellent range gun.

The only way to know is to hold and preferrably shoot the ones you are considering.

Releasing the slide comes after inserting the mag with the weak hand.  You can use the weak hand thumb  to release to release the slide as you re-grip the pistol.
Also, I found the two CZ pistols I've shot  will release the slide with a "firm"/tactical insert of the mag.  Others I know and many I read about with CZs say the same.

This may have given you MORE instead of less to consider.  All of these pistols are excellent range guns, both accurate and reliable.
Good luck, and welcome to the forum.

the only pistol mentioned here that i also own and have shooting experience with is the 75b 9mm.  it is excellent for range use and very accurate.
guns don't kill people. NINJAS kill people.

If you can find a matte stainless 9mm get it!I have one and LOVE IT!Look for the large beaver tail that is the newer version of matte.I have a poly coat 40 s&w that is just as nice and accurate. If you can find any CZ 75 buy it. In jersey they are kind of not to be found!I glad I have mine!

Welcome to the forum. I would start with a search online for the Kadet pistol. It makes a great starter pistol and will allow you to shoot inexpensively with 22LR ammo. I started originally with the 75B SS and still have it. But, since acquiring my Kadet pistol, it's the one that gets more range time. Check out the Kadet forum if you need more info.

Looks like Cheaper Than Dirt has the Kadet pistol available: http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/82449-1.html

Thanks! I actually went ahead and bought the Kadet pistol because of the similar weight. You made good points for practice, and I am not a big fan of conversions. I have heard nothing but good things about the Kadet pistol also.

While at the gun store, I got a chance to hold the SP-01 Tactical. It felt awesome. It did not feel too heavy for me, but quite balanced. I'm a little guy, about 5'5 130. But that is one of the best feeling guns I have held (granted I'm new to the gun thing, but I've tried to get a feel of a lot of different brands). Saying all this, after I get my Kadet and play with that for a while, the SP-01 will be next on the list. I might even get fancy and get a custom from CZ lol  ;D

Congrats on your new Kadet. I'm pretty sure you'll be getting a lot of range time with it. Have fun and enjoy it.
