barrel wear?
« on: June 15, 2012, 10:40:26 PM »
I picked up an 08 Phantom this afternoon and after I field stripped it and cleaned it off I noticed the top of has a rippled texture where it is rubbing against the inside of the slide. The original owner said he had maybe 200 rounds threw it.  Other than the barrel the gun is in great shape and the mags show no wear.

So do I have an issue?  Can I take this out Sunday or should I have CZ Custom look at it first?  Has anyone seen this before?

This is the barrel in the slide fully extended.

All my CZ factory mags are proof of Sir Issac Newtons postulates on Gravity.  But the dang new MecGar super-duper teflon 19 rnd with +2 bottoms stay in the mag well like a mother-in-law -- have to pull to get them to leave.

I am fairly certain that is how the barrel is machined.  I don't have my SP-01 in front of me right now but I am pretty sure it is the same and yours.  If it was a wear issue it would be smooth (polished) and the wear marks would be inline with the action of the slide.

I am not positive but I think it is relieved like that to allow for the barrel to drop during slide action.  As the slide is at the full back position the barrel has the steepest angle with respect to the frame/slide.  I think the barrel is machined to prevent it from binding with the barrel bushing in the slide.

This forum rocks!

I'm with Tdogg on this one. Both of my SP01's look like this and I have noticed it before. My .40 was used and had it, but my brand new 9mm had it also, so it's a feature, not a bug. :)

Interesting...

None of my 75s', the PCR, or the 40P have these marks. Different design, different marks - I'm good with that.

If that's the case this must be a feature exclusive to the SP-01 Tacticals.

Well I stopped at my LGS and checked out a new SP-01 (very sweet) and it has NO marks on the barrel. It looks just like every other Browning style pistol barrel I have seen = no marks, or ripples where it contacts the slide bushing.

Turning mark, it came from the initial turning (machining) of the barrel, usualy it's removed by the polishing / finishing of the barrel.

Absolutely impossible to come from contact with frame/slide, contact scratch will be in the bore axis, not perpendicular to it, as the slide/barrel movement are in the axis bore.
After a shooting spree, they always want to take the guns away from the people who didn't do it. I sure as hell wouldn't want to live in a society where the only people allowed guns are the police and the military.

You are correct.  I should have said the bushing in the slide.

Finally had a chance to stop by CZ Custom and Stuart, Angus, and Eric all looked at it and told me "no problemo - seen this before".  They are a great bunch of guys. While there I picked up a flat mainspring plug and a 15lb spring.  Now I just need some time to get to the range.

Good that the matter is now clear.
I checked my Shadow, and its barrel has very similar look.
