New PCR vs G26
« on: May 04, 2002, 09:54:46 AM »
I took my new PCR to the range for some break-in work and compared it to my Glock 26 as well.  I bought the PCR for my wife, really ;)  since I thought it would be more comfortable for her to shoot.  Anyway, I am very pleased with the PCR, the felt recoil is less than that of the G26 (using GA Arms ammo, 115gr FMJ, 124 +P GD, and 147gr FMJ), for obvious reasons.  I was more accurate with the PCR as well, shooting 1" ragged holes at 6 yds, as compared to 1.5-2" holes with the G26 (using both hands and a Weaver stance).  I'm sure the difference is that the PCR sights are more accurate of the box and I need to adjust the rear elevation on the G26, which I just have not done).

The only problems I had were with the new PCR mags, they would not hold 10 rnds and even with 9 they would not feed properly.  So I used 8 or less rnds in each mag, and everything worked smoothly after that.  I assume the mags will get better after more loading/unloading to break-in the mag springs, otherwise I will have the springs replaced.

I'm sure my wife is going to like the PCR much better.  I'll still use G26 for summer carry since it conceals better for me, but I will be borrowing "her" PCR otherwise :)

I haven't had any trouble with the 10 round magazines or my one treasured 13 round magazine. The one thing I have noted about my PCR is I don't like the decocker lever when I carry inside the waist. It rubs me wrong. I use a Kramer Glock 19 holster for my PCR and I do notice the rub. Other than this, the PCR is a great handgun. Regards, Richard

I was able to swap 1 mag with the dealer for another compact mag, but he only had 1 extra, so I contacted Mike at CZ-USA and he said we would swap out the other defective mag.  Haven't found a 13 rnd mag yet, but I'm sure I'll find one eventually.  The PCR fits my FIST Kydex IWB holster(for a G19 also) just fine, but I haven't tried to carry it yet, not until I can the mag situation settled and a few hundred more rnds at the range.  I'll see if the decocker is any problem for me.

Thanks for the input.

A friend and I are both new owners of a nickel compact.  We both have the same problem with loading 10 rounds in the mag.  I am thinking of calling CZ about this and doing the swap.  What I can't understand is that there isn't even a mm bit of give after you load that number nine round.  It's as if it really was a nine rounder.  I guess even Santa Claus couldn't get a good boy a factory 13 rounder.

Good shooting all.

I believe there is/was a quality control or manufacturing problem with some of the compact 10 rnd mags. It does seem the ones with a single witness hole are a problem (as others on the forum have mentioned). The dealer swapped me one with 3 witness holes, and it holds 10 rnds, no problem at all.

Send Mike an email at CZ-USA and see what he says.  If the mag is defective, he said he would send me another mag (I should get the replacement mag this week or early next week).

Shoot well.

A fairer comparison is the Glock 19 (G19) vs PCR. They are closer in size and as mentioned you can use a Glock 19 holster for the PCR. When I carry my PCR in my Kramer IWB holster the decocker rubs my flesh. This doesn't happen with the G19. I probably give the nod to the G19 as the better all around pistol. Why? I have owned my G19 for years and it is totally reliable, accurate, and high capacity magazines are available, even if they are trendy.

My take on the PCR is I don't like the decocker but CZ doesn't make a light weight compact CZ75. Now let me mention the grips. The PCR factory grips feel great but are chintzy. What do I mean? You can easily roll back the rubber at the top of the decocker side grip. I bought the factory wood grips and they are better made but expensive. Hakan wasn't making PCR grips when I ordered the factory grips. Today, I would order Hakan's grips without a bat of the eye.

In the end these are both fine pistols. Buy and carry the one that feels best in your hand. How do you do this? Rent them, fondle them, shoot them, and opt for the one you like best. You just plain can't make a bad pick by choosing either.

Regards,

Richard

I can roll back the edge of every set of Pachmayer grips that I own also.  Does that mean that Pachmayer makes "chintzy" grips?  It is the nature of the beast with soft rubber molded on a frame insert.

I agree the G19 is "better" for CCW.  I replaced my G19 with a G26 for CCW and the G26 is more accurate in my hands than the G19 (and the PCR is more accurate than the G26!).  I picked up the PCR for my wife, since she likes the full hand grip and because the PCR is a little heavier, I thought it would reduce the recoil just a bit.  The recoil is a little "lighter" with the PCR and the loaded chamber indicator and decocker add to the safety comfort level for my wife.  As a range gun, the PCR is great and loads of fun to shoot.  For CCW, I'll stick with my G26, or maybe a new slimline 9mm Glock, if they actually do introduce that version this Fall :)

Shoot well.
