What are your opinions of this round?  Rather have it or a 22 Mag?

I'd rather jump up to.223.

With .223 you can shoot 35gr varmint rounds that will explode more than the .22 hornet and load up to 80gr HP and hit targets at 500yd no problemo.

Can't do the same for .22 hornet IMHO.

I'd take a .22lr for general use and have a .223 handy for anything requiring more oomph.

Plus, you will find more .223 at stores than .22 hornet and with more selection.

I like the Hornet for a "walking" rifle when I'm shooting prairie dogs.

First thing my Son and I are real die hard CZ fans and we have several. We have two 22 HORNETS my Son has a FS model and I have the American model. We reload for most every thing we shoot. Our load for the 22Hornet is IMR 4227 and 35gr V-MAX bullets. This combo works very well for us, we shoot PD`S , Ground Hogs, Fox, Coyotes, small game with our Hornets. Our Hornets will both shoot an inch or less at a 100 yds. We hunt and shoot with our 527 CZ 22 Hornets a lot and would be lost with out them. And the set trigger is just great. We have Several CZ rifles and are extremly pleased with each one of them, and have never had any type of problem with any of them . Thanks for letting me join your group. GOOD LUCK TO YOU:   ken

.22 Hornet vs .22 Mag?  No contest: .22 Hornet.

The ability to reload the round is by itself a reason to own one.

As far as the Hornet vs. the .223 discussion, in reality the Hornet will do 75% of what the .223 will with 50% of the effort.  A 35 grain bullet at 3,000 fps is still three times as fast as a .22 LR round.  Think about that for a second.

And if you decide down the road that you want even more performance out a the Hornet, you can have the chamber reamed to what is knows as the .22 K-Hornet, which makes it into a much more "modern" ballistic cartridge.

.22mag is more comparable to the .17 hmr, coming in second, the hornet being a centerfire would blow it away in all depts, its also a great little round to reload  being very easy on the powder.

viking499:  MY Son and I have a CZ 22 MAG and a CZ 17HMR and they are both very accurate and a real pleasure to shoot. But when we are going hunting and the choice is one of the three. Our CZ 527 22 HORNET`S are used 90 percent of the time. The 22 Hornet is light weight, no recoil, farmer friendly low noise level, and cheap to shoot. The low noise level has got us in not scareing the farmers wife, or livestock. And also a number of 2nd shots because of the low noise level. We have taken Coyotes out to 200 yds if every thing is right. But 200 yds on a coyote is pushing the limit of a 22 HORNET   IMO . I have shot the 22 HORNET for many years and I think the 22 HORNET is a much better round than the 22 MAG or the 17HMR. and we have one of each and use them quite a bit , but just use the 22 HORNET a lot more.  GOOD LUCK TO YOU:   ken

The .223 is great when you are well clear of town but if you are dealing with rabbbits, hares and the occasional stock-worrying dog, close to town, the .22 Hornet is a better choice. Target type, typical range and close proximity (or otherwise) of neighbours are critical factors that ensure the continued popularity of the Hornet, with farmers who live close to town and the professional /recreational pest shooters who shoot on their properties.
A good shot at close range beats a 'hit' at a longer range.

i have killed everything here in Louisiana with this round, except bear. a very versatile round if you hand load . my cz 527 likes everything  i push down the barrel up to 45 gr..  lil,gun powder a medium crimp (the hornet case is thin so  a crimp is needed to keep the bullet from jumping the primer and only partial neck size) also i did a clip mod to allow for the longer 45 grn bullets and a full case of lil, gun.
the cz 527 lux i own gives me sub min. groups all day long at 100 yrds ,and the 45 grn hornady with a BC. of 202  will take game at 200 yrds with good accuracy . but to be a good hornet rifleman one must know the wind, these light bullets can be trouble in a good cross wind, but that is part of the fun shooting this 82 year wildcat in our modern rifles and the old ones.
