Mag Problem, video attached
« on: September 27, 2012, 11:28:11 PM »
Hmmm. Went to clean my P-01 and ejected all ammo from magazine, about halfway through the rounds just kind of got "lodged" on the mag and I had to give it a whack.

Emptied, reloaded, same thing a couple times over. This is the factory P-01 mag, less than 6 months old. Usually keep this one with defensive rounds. I have went through a number of these at the range (same ammo, Federal HST 147gr standard P) with no issue. Usually keep one in chamber, 12 in mag as I heard it's a good idea not to load up to capacity when it's for "long term" storage.

Made a video showing it:

Any ideas?

Hmm, gonna go toss some S&B FMJ in there and see if it happens with those.

Have you tried tearing it down and cleaning it?  Have you had any problems with it when shooting the gun?

Also, FYI, it's a myth that you shouldn't fully load your magazines for storage.  Staying compressed (or decompressed) isn't what wears out a spring.  Rather, constant changes between compression and decompression is what really puts wear on it.  Keep your magazines fully loaded and educate anyone who tells you otherwise.

Okay, took apart mag & cleaned with CLP, made sure to use clean cloth afterwards to make sure to remove lube to max extent possible.

After a few more loads & unloads think I have the problem. If you look at mags there are two holes near the front side, see video below showing front of ammo getting "caught up" on this hole.

Haven't looked at my mecgar mags to see if they have this same cutout.

Once again, Federal HST 147gr P

So as far as I can tell the hang up only occurs on the opening on the side opposite of the mag release, which means when in the pistol this hole will be filled by the mag catch latch thingy whatever it's called. Thus assuming when firing this won't be an issue.

Having unused hole on other side is still disconcerting.

Will run a few mags worth at the range, will set me back $25 but small price to pay I suppose.

Try taking the mag apart and running a Dremel tool with a polishing wheel over that cutout in the mag.  I'm thinking it may have a burr that the cartridge is hanging up on.

If by that statement you're saying this is not a Mecgar magazine that probably explains everything. Mecgars make the OEM mags and it's been reported countless times that 'other' aftermarket mags aren't worth a hoot.

I have factory 14 rd and 10 rd mags along with Mecgar....
and they all have the cut outs. this is where the magazine catch
grabs onto the mag.

Absolutely correct.

So you haven't had this happen with the magazine in the gun?  Remember that sometimes things with firearms are designed to happen at high speed.  For example, I was working on my Sister's CZ and a conversion barrel.  When I would hand cycle the action with a magazine in, I would often get failures to extract and doublefeeds.  Taking the gun out and shooting it gave me no issues whatsoever.  Yesterday I shot (1) 16 round magazine, (2) 20 round magazines, and (1) 26 round big stick through it.  Zero issues.  Hand cycling it, I had issues every third or fourth round.  This is especially true if there is a locking mechanism in place, such as your magazine catch.

Just meant it was a factory magazine ... all I own are OEM or mecgar labeled.

Went to range yesterday ... One box of HST, two factory mags

No FTF issues, 12-13 rounds per mag so plenty of rounds below mag catch holes

Will still take apart mags and look to see if there is a burr inside
