CZ 527 7.62x39 mag issue
« on: December 30, 2012, 10:37:18 PM »
Has anyone here had feeding issues with their 7.62x39 mags? I've found that due to the design, the rear of the follower is allowed to tilt down into the mag body. I can push it down in the back and it just stays there. This happens with both an unloaded mag and loaded. It's like it has no upward pressure in the back. Also there are no guides in the mag body to keep the follower straight. This frequently would cause a feeding issue. Basically before pushing the bolt forward, each time I would just need to press downward a bit on the front end of the round to make sure that the rear end was up against the feed lips.

In trying to find a solution, I've found that a 527 .223 mag spring (different design) seems to solve the problem. I know the mag bodies are different, but I've had that spring in the x39 mag for a while now and I have yet to have a problem.

I called CZ-USA about this and talked to a smith. He seemed skeptical that my .223 spring was working in the x39 mag, and wanted me to send the entire rifle in, saying he could get it feeding. Well I don't want to pay to send the whole rifle in. I was actually just calling them to find out if it was a known issue and to see if I could get another mag spring for their .223 mags.

Anyone else had this issue? Any other solutions?

ive had to tinker with the mags of various calibers sand- file the jaws compress- replace springs , i found that it was possible to damage the mags when loading the last round, in my case actually spreading - widening the sides - jaws of the mag which had the knockon effect of as you said af the follower not coming up level under the round- so when you attempted to chamber the round the face of the bolt skippes over it, leaving it still in the mag . it was such a problem in the 3 shot m1 mags that i could only ever load 2 rounds until i had different springs made for them. but you seem to have cured your own problem with the .223 spring- i assume the original mag spring isnt damaged , ive seen the loop at the end of the spring broken on one.

Thanks for the reply. Nope, the original spring is in tact. The x39 spring seems to take the length of the entire mag body. The .223 spring's coil is more centered in the back half of the mag body, and has the loops on each end extending out to the full length of the mag body. I think the feed lips and mag body are in good shape, it's just that spring isn't providing upward pressure where it needs to.

CZ-USA doesn't have 527 mag springs available in their online store unfortunately, but when I get a chance I'm going to call their parts department and see if I can order one.

I haven't had any feeding issues yet, as I just picked it up this morning. However, the mags are a bit tricky to load, and if not done properly you can only get three rounds in. This probably relates to the spring issue at hand.

For what we're paying for these mags they should work as expected!  >:(

Just to add my .02 to the discussion.

All my x39 mags had burrs on the inside where the holes were punched out.  A few seconds with a file fixed the feeding issues.  Previously the rounds were sent skyward at a 45 degree angle when the case head would hang up on the burr.

Never had any feeding issues with three mags on mine, can't help there.

I had some issues like Chris with burrs in the mag - especially on the lips....  you might also check to make sure that the follower slides nicely inside the mag without the spring... If the mag body is dented or bent - it could make a tight spot that catches the follower...

I also ran into "Issues" when the spring was inserted backwards or upside down....  It seems like the spring will go in multiple ways - but it only works right in 1 orientation....

Thanks
