How did they get the information in the first place !!??
In The Netherlands this info is only kept in police files and they are not public !
But then again, emails tend to " suddenly"  appear out of nowhere  don't they ...?
And our informant must keep his identity a secret...hahaha.

Yes, it was public information. The problem though is that when you make a FOIA request there is a record of who made the request, thus there is accountability if the  information is misused. The same can't be said for something read in a publication. There is no more accountability now, unless the Journal can still be held accountable and it seems to me they should be. There is also the matter of personal privacy. If the FOIA request would be an unreasonable invasion of personal privacy, that request can be denied which is apparently the grounds Putnam county is using to refuse access.

The response to a fear of armed men is to employ armed men...somehow it's appropriate at a newspaper headquarters but not a grade school....things that make you go "hmmm". Sometimes thier hypocrisy gets a wee bit threadbare, doesn't it...

Needless to say, that I was little pissed when I saw my info on there. Moreover, after telling my Dad that he was also included along w/ a bunch of other friends and fellow Marine vets, he called AND wrote a scathing letter.     He now no longer reads the Journal News!

Though one bright spot in this uproar; I got in touch w/ a neighbor I didn't know had a pistol (Glock, I'll try to convert O0) and we went to the range and plan on to do so more often now that we can go together and "bench shoot" each other at parties!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!  What hypocrites.

There is nothing about that article that isn't great. My favorite part though:

"...pistol permit holders in Putnam County will soon to be posted.

[update---Putnam County officials have since announced their intention to not comply with the Journal News' request for the names and addresses of pistol permit holders]"

I hope they get their hindquarters sued off.

Yes, this was also a very satisfying update. But losing subscribers because you think you're helping them, I thought ranked slightly higher.

Just a thought, Place an add in the newspaper, listing all of the employees names and addresses (plus their income if you can find that out).
When they refuse to sell you the add, YOU SHOULD HAVE GROUNDS FOR A LAWSUIT.
Use the Liberals own tactics against them!

Agreed.  And I just feel it wont be too much longer before the Journal finds themselves in court defending themselves against this accountability.

The info is already online.  Personal info is at the bottom:
http://www.newrochelletalk.com/content/map-where-are-journal-news-employees-your-neighborhood

How did the paper respond to having their info shared?
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/03/nyregion/putnam-officials-keep-gun-permit-records-from-journal-news.html?_r=0

So, an anti-gun newspaper hires...armed guards.

I find this bemusing. They say it's because "people have a right to know".

So what do you do now that you know your neighbor owns a gun? You go over there and start an argument with him about gun control? You treat him more carefully? What's the point?
