Ok...
Here is where I am at the moment.

buck and handgun have both proven the concept of using a roll pin to secure the knobs to the bolt.
That is great, because now I can go a little further.
:)

Here is what I've drawn up.

The knobs are .275" in diameter and .1875" tall and threaded for 8-32.
I have a .125" carbide (4 flute, center cutting) endmill to start the holes in the bolt (~0.165" deep), now I'm looking for a good .140" end mill to bring it up to size for 8-32 threads in the bolt (a little less than 50% threads, but this way I'm not removing as much material with the tap, which would make it a little easier).
I have a couple of powdered metal (kind of a best of both worlds, between carbide and HSS) 8-32 bottoming taps on the way, as well as some SS 8-32 x 5/16 long set screws.

As soon as I have everything I need, I'll get to work on the hard part, making the first cut on the bolt...

jon,
dude,

seems perfect.. to me.. if I had all the machine shop tools (again/previous world/employment) seem great.   i really like the position.. drill / tap into a already opening.. equal distant, horizontal/vertical,  a decent height to get the height needed to quickly grasp/rack the slide without other issues..  thereby quick load, reload, clear if needed...

do it!  and i am glad to see someone else knows about thread clearance.. drill a bit oversize and tap..   very few need the classic drill/tap ratio.. in fact.... most are better off with extra clearance..  few need machine tolerance. certainly not here.

kudos to you to notice and report!

a broken tap is a pain the keester to remove/fix.!

Hiya and agree that those mods looks good and well as make it easier ta grip. I sat here with my kadet 2 and worked the slide till my fingers got a lil sore. It took quite a few pulls back tho to make em sore, I'm glad its not a problem I need to address with mine.
When I train with the Kadet, I have 8mags, pull the slide back to load the first round, count to 8 or 9 rounds, apply safety or decocker, swap mags. After the 8mags, apply safety or decocker set on bench, pointing downrange, load mags repeat. When I'm done shooting, fire the last mag empty, slide locks open, quick wipe and in the case it goes. Maybe have to pull slide back after a few light strikes to visualize one in the pipe before another hammer drop, but pulling the hammer back before doing so the slide moves back easily.
Using the above routine if I have ta leave the bench for anything, pick the gun back up and empty the one round, leaving the Kadet with slide locked open.  Look foward to this and many other creative Kadet projects. And a special thanks for Dennis and his uplula for the kadet, my left thumb thanks ya, and my right thumb thanks ya.   Be well
