black rifle uppers
« on: January 21, 2013, 02:24:59 PM »
currently have a 20" upper with a lower parts kit on backorder with midwayusa.  originally they were estimating the ship date of 2/7/13, now they have pushed it back to 3/17/13.  I think obviously i need to leave my order open as they wont charge me till it ships.
my questions,
should I place another back order with Rguns?  they are also accepting build orders and estimate a 4 week lead time, they also claim they wont charge until it ships.
Is there another source of in stock reasonably priced complete uppers with BCG?  I want 5.56 in either a 18" or 20" barrel.
thoughts ?

PSA has had a few come and go.  You'll need to check several times a day, and when they are in they go fast!  http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/complete-uppers.html

Now really isn't a good time to be looking for "reasonably priced" AR's.

It's not a complete upper, but you can get a barrel, complete BCG, and muzzle device from AR15Performace.  You have to buy a barrel to buy parts at this point, but all you would need is the Upper, a gas block, charging handle, and gas tube.  These are VERY good parts...it is what I used to build my 6.8 AR.

Besides, building an AR upper is stupid-easy.

I forgot to mention that if you get a barrel and bolt from AR15Performance, they will headspace it for you at no cost before it ships.  No need to see a gunsmith afterwards for headspacing issues, just put them together and you're good to go!

Very interesting, as my AR15A2 could stand to be re-barreled.  8)

All his barrels use a modified 5R rifling and are melonite coated inside and out.  His barrels are made by E.R. Shaw to his specifications.  (E.R. Shaw also makes barrels for Wilson Combat, the high quality AR and 1911 builder.)  I belive he chambers them himself, before having them sent out for melonite treatment.    Harrison's 5.56 barrels are all Wylde chambered and his 6.8 barrels are his own propriety ARP chamber that is superior to the 6.8 SPC II.  You use standard reloading dies because the case dimensions don't change, but the twist rate, leade, and throat do.

Emailed them and found out that the Muzzle Ends are not threaded for Flash Suppressors and Muzzle Brakes, so that's a no-go for me.  :(

Only on the Target Crown barrels.

The standard barrels are threaded.

My gasblock has two set screws on the bottom.  One set screw goes into a "dimple" in the barrel and the other one is additional insurance.  We red loctite'd the gas block on the barrel and blue loctite'd the set screws in place.  The red loctite acts as gasket-gas barrier and the blue loctite ensures we can remove it if we need to.  It is debatable if the red loctite is even necessary, but my uncle has been building AR's longer than I have (this is my first one).  His experience with AR's/M16's is through National Guard, USAF, and DHS-CBP.

As far as low profile vs standard profile...that's the beauty of AR's!  It's up to YOU what YOU want to do with it!

You could try ordering a build on Daniel Defense site at midnight. I did say try as that route seems to get filled up quickly each and every night at midnight.
