712 feed ramp/lifter

I have read where some people have "welded" the feed ramp/lifter on the 712's used in 3 gun..does anyone know what is being welded and why?..pics?

They square up the end of the lifter to keep from stabbing themselves or having gloves get caught while fast loading during competition.
