D.I.Y. rubber grips
« on: February 03, 2014, 01:53:56 PM »
I've made my own rubber grip sleeves using bicycle tube and took it for a test at the range on saturday (the gun, not the bicycle:-)
Results were fantastic: super grip with NO movement in the hand + NO vibration felt + it really helps to absorb recoil. This is a MAJOR upgrade to the factory plastic grips.
I made two sleeves (one over the other) as this adds to the girth for a better grip comfort + I used the part of the tube that is ribbed, as the outer sleeve, so this eliminates the need for stipling.
- One of our IDPA pro-shooters shot a full mag through my '83 and was quite impressed with the grips as well.
Hope link works (posting via mobile). If not, mods please help. Sorry for poor quality pic:

Pretty nice shed engineering there. The problem I have with my 82 is that it's snappy and the weird safety hinge built into the beaver tail bites into the web of my hand. Others have complained about it too. I'm thinking about solving that next, not sure what it will take.

Disassemble the pistol far enough to remove the safety and use a file or a dremel tool (go lightly) to round the sharp lower edges of the safety so that it no longer leaves two little cuts in the web of your hand.  After rounding the lower edges, use cold blue or black paint to protect the steel.

I forgot to say that I really like your idea of using a couple layers of bicycle tubing as a grip sleeve, with the ribbed piece as the outer one for a better hold.

Thanks.
I lightly coat the all the steel on the grips before putting on the plastic grips and rubber sleeves. Because I carry IWB, only the rubber is in contact with my skin. Durban is an east-coastal city of South Africa so it's very humid here (especially now, in summer)
This set-up of rubber grips (over oiled steel) really adds EXTRA protection for my firearm against perspiration.
The rest of my firearm gets protected with Meguires Car Polish - no oily residue on my clothing + maximum protection against the elements.

Fantastic idea! Going out to the shed right now. If I bring the tubes in now, they might be thawed out for tomorrow!
