85B Compact vs Firing Pin Block Safety
« on: October 30, 2013, 05:44:06 AM »
Looking to buy my first CZ for my little gun collection.  but i have some questions...

How exactly does the firing pin block safety work?
And how does it affect the trigger?
Is the 85B Combat the only CZ without the firing pin block safety?
And Is that enough of a reason in and of itself to select the 85B Combat over the other models?

With only a few inexpensive changes, you cannot detect the presence of the FP block in a "B" series.  So the answer is no.

In many ways, I prefer the FP block since it adds a margin of safety.  CZ's FP block is a time proven non-intrusive design and is benign with only a $5.00 spring change.

Because the "B" denotes the presence of a firing pin block, there is no CZ 85 B Combat, just the 85 B or the 85 Combat.

I think the Shadow models do not have firing pin blocks.

CZ Custom has, if I recall correctly, reported that non-B versions of the 75/85 are quite drop safe.  I doubt that they would have started modifying guns to remove the FPB if that wasn't true.  And, they convinced CZ-UB to make FPBless models.

By removing the slide you can see how the FPB works.  Pulling the trigger raises a prong, which moves the cylindrical block in the slide upward, thus unlocking the firing pin.  Thus, there is no way a firing pin can ignite a primer unless the trigger is pulled.

I gather that the reason CZ Custom began removing FPBs was to reduce and smooth the trigger pull.  Because the trigger on a B pistol does more work than the trigger on an otherwise identical FPBless pistol, I must assume the trigger on the FPBless pistol will be superior and could be refined better.  However, I assume that if actions on both pistols were Schmekyized, I doubt I could discern the difference, or if I could, I assume the difference would be negligible, and any minor penalty in performance would be worthwhile paying for the small improvement in safety.

FWIW, I recently dropped a loaded Kadet upper, mounted on an 85 Combat frame (by accident of course) onto it's muzzle. The hammer didn't drop and the gun didn't fire.  The floor surface at the range was a type of laminate and the distance was about 3.5-4 feet.  Even though nothing happened, I hope I never repeat that mishaps again!
