Bullet won"t go into chamber
« on: January 11, 2014, 09:37:07 PM »
Every so often the bullet won't go into chamber in my 97B. If I smack the mag up most times it will go into chamber. With new mags I still have the same problem so I don't think it's the mag springs.I'm using factory ammo 230gr. RN. Could it be a worn mag release that is not holding the mag up enough?  Appreciate any help.

try marking your mags so you know one from another that way you maybe able to trace it to one mag.

also, if you figure out which mag, try using the palm of your hand to press up on the mag while shooting and see if that  helps.

if you can trace it to a mag, then there you go.

also, are you shooting factory or reload?

Clean your mag out.  Mine gets really dirty after a couple outings.

It happens with all 4 of my mags. Two of them are new.

I have cleaned my mags inside & out with a dry rag.

Sometimes the extractor does not slide into the groove in the cartridge.  This is when the cartridge is about half way into the chamber.  Is this where your problem is?

It seems like the nose of the bullet is hitting the edge of the feed ramp.

Does it do it with another BRAND of ammunition?
Make sure slide rails are clean and lubed for free full speed travel..

Just Some General possibilities:
1.  Crud build up behind/in the extractor channel
2.  Weak recoil spring
3.  Weak Mag springs
4.  Breech flat surface that rides on the cartridges in the mag needs polishing and or the feed edge bevelled .
5.  Bullets slightly contacting the slide stop--needs bevelling/polishing
6.  Feed ramp dirty/needs polishing

1SOW. Thanks for the advice

I'll check the extractor channel.

I'm the 3rd. owner of this pistol that I know of & it's dated 1998 so if it hasn't been changed before it could be time.

With new mags I can eliminate the springs.

By the battery do you mean the follower? With the new mags I wouldn't think the problem was there. Would you recommend polishing the older mag followers with 1200 grit wet & dry sandpaper followed by some polishing compound on a dremel?

I just installed a new slide stop. It may need a little polishing.

I've polished the feed ramp a little. Only had 400 & 1200 grit wet & dry sandpaper followed with some polish on a dremel. I'll try it again & do a little better job.

If any one has any other suggestions I'm all ears. I love this pistol but I have to work out this kink.

Ok two things.  CZ mag springs are notoriously weak.  You may need to get some Wolff extra power springs if available.  My 75bd had the same issue.

Also the early 97's had a really narrow feed ramp only intended for FMJ bullet profiles.  It sounds like you're actually having issues with ball ammo as well.  Might want to call CZ USA and see what they can do.  It's my understanding they will polish and throat the chamber for free, although it sounds like your issue may not be related to that.

I was having this problem before I replaced the slide stop. It needed replacing because it was pretty banged up & wouldn't keep the slide locked when a mag was removed.  It's dated 1998 & I am the third owner that I know of.

I polished the slide stop & bring it to the range this weekend to see if that solves the problem. Being an old pistol & I've put about 5K through it in the last 6mo.  I'm sure that everything you mentioned should be done but I would like to do one thing at a time otherwise I wouldn't know what the exact cause is.  I'll post what happens.
It's a range pistol so it's not that big of a deal but it sure gets annoying.
