Replacing the firing pin retaining pin
« on: February 28, 2014, 09:25:27 PM »
Having a problem driving the firing pin retaining pin back in.  Should I force it or do in need to be doing something as I hammer it in? I should have ordered replacement pin, but didn't.

Once you have it started in the slide press the firing pin in so the retaining pin goes through the relief slot.

I have had replacement pins that were too big and had to reused my old ones, no problem.

It just does not want to come out or be driven back in, the retaining pin that is. I have the notch in the plunger faced out and the grooves in the firing pin facing up.  Do you suggest I try pulling the retaining out with pliers, twisting it as I go or just hammer the heck out of it to drive it back in?

Got it.  First tip for newbies: start with the right tools and the right work surface.  Once I followed the tip to press in the firing pin and used a proper sized hammer the pin went most of the way in.  I will replace the retaining pin when I order some other stuff from CGW.

Maybe I spoke too fast....how far is the pencil suppose to move when you do the firing pin test?  I pointed the gun straight up pulled the trigger and it bumped up about an inch.  Got a feeling that isn't enough

That should be good. It depends on how much resistance the pencil gets inside the barrel. I've done that test with the same results so you should be good. You can always use a punch to push in the firing pin block from under the slide and another to then push on the back of the firing pin to see how far forward it can go.

As for the pin, it is designed to only go in one way. The hole on the left hand side of the slide is slightly bigger and the pin is slightly bigger on one end. That may help for next time.

Try holding the gun so the barrel is horizontal.  Then put the eraser end of the pencil in against the breech face and release the hammer with the trigger.  The pencil should come out of the gun, travel a few feet then fall to the ground.  I've never tried it aiming up.  You are probably OK.

I had the same problem just take a 1/8th punch and push in on the end of the firing pin as you slide the punch all the way through. Once you have everything in place take the new firing pin retaining pin and as you push that through using it to push the punch out the other side. Don't ask me how I know this? I'm embarrassed to say been there done that. After a phone call to the CZ doctor "David" he gave me the tip and suggestion. He is very helpful and understanding. Thanks David @CGW

When driving the firing pin retaining pin into place I have the the slide on the receiver with the hammer lowered onto the firing pin. This will align the notch on the firing pin with the pin hole in the slide allowing the retaining pin to be driven in without obstruction.
