CGW Sights on a C-100
« on: October 20, 2013, 02:13:20 AM »
The factory sights on my TriStar C-100 were horrible in my opinion. The rear was usable but the front sight dot was so low that it was nearly on the top of the slide, so I contacted Schmeky to see if he had anything that would fit. He directed me to the EZ Drift sight set and I ordered up a set, they arrived in just a couple of days and I went to the bench this evening.

First off, the sights are clearly well made, no doubt about it. There are good instructions included as well as a couple of allen wrenches and a nylon faced drift punch, which I thought was a nice touch even though it didn't work out for me (more on that later).

I did run into some minor hiccups, but not due to the sights or anything to do with CGW. It appears that the folks in Turkey that manufacture these guns do a complete polycoat AFTER the sights are installed, so there was some sticking.... The nice little nylon punch wouldn't budge the front sight after I removed the roll pin and I split the nylon while trying. So I graduated to one of my brass punches which, after some persuasion and a few choice words, did the trick and finally broke the sight free. A few taps later and the sight was out.

Anyway, on to the front sight install. Out of the package, the front sight wouldn't go into the dovetail at all (which I expected). Grabbed some 320 grit paper and laid it on my old surface plate, a few strokes of the sight bottom across the paper had things moving in the right direction. I noticed that the rear of the front sight might be hitting the top of the slide, so I gave a gentle tap and then removed the sight. Sure enough, I could see some lines where the top of the slide was hitting this overlap portion of the new sight. Again, a few strokes of abrasive paper got me closer. I used a Sharpie marker to color the bottom of this overlap portion and made another attempt, then inspected the Sharpie'd area for marks... a bit more work was required but the second round got me in there.

The sight slid in with about an 1/8" left to go and I used a different nylon punch to tap it home. Reinstalled the pin and proceeded to the rear sight.

Ok, the rear sight took a LOT more time. They must be training Olympic weight lifters at the factory in Turkey.... or maybe they use some big press machine to install, beats me. At any rate, the rear sight was absolutely the most difficult to remove sight I've ever dealt with. It was waaay tighter than it needed to be, then the polycoat on top of that of course. It was still tight at the halfway point... had to file the mushroomed brass punch 4 times before I got it out.

(No really, you should always clean those up....I have a scar in my left arm where a pretty large piece of a punch shot under the skin and traveled about an inch, did that 20 years ago and it's a lesson I haven't forgotten)

That had me thinking that the new sight would require a lot of sanding on the bottom to fit, but that wasn't the case. I was able to push it in with some firm pressure, installed the set screws and it's ready to sight in. I will likely add a couple drops of loctite back here too after I get the sight where I want it.

The sight picture is outstanding now! Nice product, I expect they'll improve my shooting with this gun.

If you decide to do a sight change on your TriStar, do yourself a favor and make sure you have a good set of soft jaws for your vise. The ones I have are around 1/4" thick red rubber and this would have been impossible without them, no way would card stock have put up with the rear sight removal. I'll try to get some shots thru it soon and post my opinion/results afterwards.

http://cajungunworks.com/sights_and_sight_sets.html

I purchased part# E-Z/D-9/40

As promised, I stepped out back and checked them out in action. 30 rounds total, 10 each from 5, 7 and 10 yards. (This is the qualifying course of fire for the IL concealed carry classes....21 of 30 must be on the silhouette)
I covered the X with the front sight at all ranges.

The lowest hits on target are from 5 yards, I was centering the red fiber vertically in the rear sight groove instead of aligning the top of the sights. Guess I'm used to seeing that dot centered up-n-down. The fiber rides very close to the top of the front sight rather than being in the center of the unit.

Very happy with the sight picture and the serrations on the front sight help me verify my focus is right. (I struggle with focusing on both sights on shorter handguns like this)

Great Post that explains the Sight installation!
When I did a similar installation on my L-120 a few months ago, I went directly to my Dremel with a cut-off wheel and cut the rear sight in half. The cut was across the slide and made removal a lot simpler. Yes, you destroy the existing sight but based on my experience with Springfield XD sights several years ago, I just cut to the chase. Literally.
The front sight was 45 minutes of:  sand and fit, sand and fit, pound part way in, pound back out, sand and fit. The effort is worth it but these sights require significant effort to replace.
Today, I am picking up an S-120 and I will get to do it all again.... ::)
The accuracy of the L-120 has really impressed me so I think its worth it.
Hopefully, David will have some more Hammer and Sear kits available soon.  :D

So as much as I love the EZ/D sights, the rear sight is a big un. I'm planning to use the C-100 for carry duty at times and decided I'd make a slightly smaller rear sight.

I nailed the dovetail dimensions right off but somewhere I screwed up the gap between bottom of the sight and the slide. I had 2 or 3 designs drawn up at the same time and probably just screwed up a dimension. Anyway, I'll make another and drop the sight body down by .030". I might dump the overhang at the front of the sight too, it doesn't look as good as it did in my head. Rather than the horizontal lines I left this one smooth so I could stipple it, gonna practice on this one and see how it looks. Still some chamfer work to be done also.

Great work! Thanks for sharing. I'm a little confused about the silver sight in your last post though. This is a different sight. Yes? Did you get it at the same place?

Yes it is a different sight, I made the profile on a Sodick brand wire EDM on Thursday. Used a milling machine to cut the sight channel and narrow the sides.

I'm not happy with the gap between the slide and sight or the front section, so I'll make another one this coming week if I get a chance.

Thanks for the write-up and pics milq!

I ordered the FO front from CGW along with a spring set for my Stingray.  I anticipated that I would have some issues due to the generous Poly/Duracoat application.  First hint of that was trying to get a TLR-1 on the pic rail... coating is so thick the light won't attach properly!  Looks like you've confirmed that for me.

I'll be sure to pay attention to your lessons-learned before attempting to replace mine.

Won't be doing my rear sight... but I have the good fortune of owning a P500 pusher if I do eventually replace it.

Fixed the gap, chopped the front section and knocked out a couple of other designs also. None have been chamfered yet and all have a bit of extra height so I can fine tune POI.

Very nice! It's great to have access to a mill and know how to use it. A good machinist can make it all look so easy but it's not.

Finally managed to chamfer/dehorn and apply some tool black. I'm hoping to shoot tomorrow to see if I need to lower the sight height or not. I didn't even attempt shooting when it was still unfinished/steel colored, huge amounts of glare.
