Finish choices for my CZ-82?
« on: November 20, 2014, 12:31:15 AM »
Having lacquered the slides on my two 82's I'd finally like to actually do a full finish on one of them - but without the necessity of doing more than a simple field stripping. Is that practical? Having more than my share of thumbs I'm not keen on having firing pin, etc. flying all over the place. Looks like parkerizing is out, but would a DuraCoat finishing make sense?  The 82 in question is very clean except for a couple of abrasions in the plastic portion. Can they be taken out with 00 steel wool or thru some other means? Any and all advice is appreciated.

By its very definition, any 'full finish' will requires more than 'simple field stripping'.

While completely dis-assembling a CZ82/83 receiver can certainly be a daunting task (as anyone who has toiled to get the sear spring and automatic safety properly in place can attest), other steps beyond a field strip are not that hard to do.  Removing the firing pin to clean the channel is something I want to do once a year, or so.  If you are happy with the current sight alignment, just pull the firing pin and the extractor to strip the slide and finish away.  Otherwise, another 'lacquering' may just be your best bet.

I have had very good success in taking some nasty scratches out of the plastic stocks.  I use 600-grit wet-o-dry sandpaper dipped in water, elbow grease, and patience.  A follow up with a soft cloth and some automotive polish can make them shine (relatively speaking).  I have been surprised more than once how good they can end up.  I always planned to lightly spray a pair of them with some truck bed-liner paint to cover some flaws and add 'gripability', but I still have not gotten around to it.

Thanks. I'll need to reassess how ambition I am for the "full finish." In truth, I could live with just the lacquer approach.
