Thanks! Looks like the Vz58 is pretty much good to go!

Maybe Rob Ski and the folks at AK Operators Union will run a Vz58 through one of their usual torture tests (which look like they're "real world" applicable compared to just stuffing a rifle action with dirt).

BTW, the vaunted all US-made CAI RAS47 just failed miserably after only 5,000 rounds...so much for cast bolts / carriers, etc. and misc. pot metal parts:

Wow.  That RAS performed terribly.  Never had any interest in buying one, but considering that ~$1k in ammo can kill a $600+ rifle, that's simply unacceptable.

While I appreciate Century trying to make an entirely US made AK, considering their "value" orientation, they'd be far ahead to import new parts kits from abroad and assemble instead of the US made route...

That video was shocking.  Seems to be cheaply made through out.

Regarding the No-Go failure, it was clear that he used a CIP gauge.  I know, per Century itself, that the VZ2008 is chambered with SAAMI specs instead of CIP.  Could the RAS47, being Century and US-made, also be chambered in SAAMI?  Would that make a difference?  I don't know as I don't have adequate grasp of the differences between the shoulder angles and lengths of the two gauges.

To make things even more confusing, apparently Chinese 7.62x39 (SKS) chambers have slightly different shapes, angles, and lengths to them, and East German gauges also have slight differences from CIP and SAAMI gauges.

I'm very relieved that the VZ2008 is largely made from surplus parts.  The parts made by Century all seem to be either easily switched out for better (slant brake, gas piston), out-sourced (barrel, receiver), or overall well-made (sear, disconnector).  The cheap, pot-metal type moldings used for the front sight ears and the bad wood on the RAS47 are flat-out embarrassments.

It's disappointing how many $500-600 American made ARs one can buy that are actually good quality but yet there seems to be a lack of American made AKs even under $800 that are decent

I need to pick up a WASR one of these days before they are gone

I have heard that DDIs are good, but they've been using (forged) Bulgarian bolts / carriers, etc. But, I hear they are working on making their own forged AK innards.

It's not rocket science, but it's got to be done right.

She's a beauty! Somehow, I doubt that was a Century build but it looks like it might have been serviced by them!

Go back and look at the wear on that gun's bolt and trunnion.  I'd guess another 1k rounds before headspace opens up and the rifle becomes profoundly unsafe.

Considering relatively high quality guns like the Yugos are available for the same price, it truly is a travesty.  And at the $500-$700 range in AKs, I prefer the Yugos to the WASRs -- only significant negative is that the Yugos don't have chrome lined barrels...
