EAA refuses to cover the finish on my Sar ST 10
« on: February 06, 2015, 04:04:30 PM »
The finish on my Sar ST 10 was not put on right from the factory.  It comes off very easily, unlike my Sar K2 45 and my wife's Sar B6P.  It's very obvious that it is a defect.  I called EAA and talked to Dawn, who listened to my description of what is happening and told me she would see if it's covered.  She talked to Gus and he told her to tell me it would not be covered, that the finish is painted on and not covered. She insinuated that I had done something to it.  I told her I merely put a light on the rail and all kinds of finish came off.  I told her I did put the same light on the Sar K2 45 and the finish held up fine, as it should.  The light has plastic clamps that fit it on the rail. I told her that when I took off the plastic zip tie that the Turks put on the guns to ship them, it had taken some of the finish off where it was riding on the slide.  I am through with buying anything else that has a warranty from EAA.  I have bought 6 handguns from them in the last year.  Now I am going to call Buds, because I bought their lifetime warranty also, and see if they will do anything.
Looks like I'll have to add Buds to that list also. They were no help either, although at least they gave a point.  Their warranty doesn't kick in until the year is up on EAA's warranty.  But they tried to use the same logic that EAA did: they don't cover normal wear on finish.  EAA wouldn't even look at it, now would Buds. The bright side is if I have to get it refinished myself, the old finish will be a breeze to strip down.

Sounds like a great excuse to get it in a color you have always wanted. Do you have pics of the finish wearing off?
snakeye, no worries, I don't need someone in a leotard. :)

My understanding is that alloy frames can be hard to refinish, even with cerakote.  There is a difference of opinion.  One man says he has done plenty of guns successfully.  Another says he has seen many guns malfunction afterwards. I did a little research on aluminum alloy and it corrodes, but the corrosion hardens and protects the gun, but turns the metal dull.  Not sure how true any of that is, but I can make this gun a nightstand weapon only. I don't see a refinishing in it's future.

If it was me I'd just strip the frame and leave it bare...

Sounds like the thing to do. Thanks.

Sorry to be a grouch but EAA has a well deserved reputation for bad customer service.   I had a new Witness Match .40 several yrs ago with feeding issues.  EAA was not helpful and I finally resolved the problem by letting my local smith take care of it.  I unloaded the Witness thereafter and vowed to avoid their products in the future.

I knew I was taking a chance with buying pistols warrantied by EAA.  I had dodged the bullet 6 times before this one winged me.  I did it because the CZ clones are inexpensive and a great value.  This one bad experience shouldn't make pull my chain so much, but it's the principal of the thing.  They are not a member of the BBB, I checked.  They don't seem to care if you don't buy anything else, they are down right smug since they are a monopoly on the Witness and the Sar. Now let's compare Century Arms.  I bought a Canik Stingray that had feeding problems.  Sent it in on their dime and they fixed it and got it back to me in 10 days. Guess I will stick with the Caniks from now on. Can't wait to get my S-120.

Aluminum can be finished/refinished if the metal is treated correctly.
I had the right to remain silent...

but not the ability.

That's one opinion, like I said.  How to treat it correctly is not clear from what I have found. Can you rec someone that can do it correctly?

Wahoo1 again

I don't know what part of the world you're in, but Dale at gripreductions.com does beautiful cerakote and duacoat work at reasonable rates. I've had him cerakote an old Sig P220 and a very worn S&W model 39. His shop is only about 2 miles from where I live so it's easy for me to just drop off and pick up.
