Which Buttstock
« on: December 31, 2014, 09:55:49 AM »
Well, I'm STILL waiting for PSA to ship my VZ2008.  So some of my questions may not make sense, as I've never even seen the VZ2008 yet.  However...

I'm pretty sure I'll be wanting to change out the buttstock.  I will first try some rubber pipe insulation, and maybe some wrapping over that (vet wrap, bike handlebar wrap, pink duct tape, etc).  But I'm guessing I will end up wanting something else.  Can I get some pictures of what you guys have done as to a different stock setup?

From the pics I've seen so far, I think I like the AR type stock, but with a cheek riser attached to put the top of the cheek piece in line with the top of the receiver.  Without the check piece, the buttstock angles down and just doesn't look right to me.  Plus, I plan to mount an optic, so I think I would need the higher positioning the cheek piece would provide.

If I go with an AR type buttstock, does the shock absorbing ones actually help with recoil?  I definitely like the ones that fold?  But I assume I can run any AR buttstock I want on those, and just buy the folding mechanism.  Correct?

Google image search: https://www.google.com/search?q=vz58+buttstock&es_sm=93&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=zUKkVIr1IY_-yQS464GgAw&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAg&biw=1280&bih=677

Basically, any AR stock or universal stock can be mounted.  Stormwerkz and Czechpoint are the primary domestic sources of stock adapters.

Check out VZ58rifle.com (both their Czech and English language sites) for most of the Czech made options.  FAB Defense/Mako also makes several direct fit options...

Also google search this forum for specific stock options you see on the google image search you like.

Before you go fancy, shoot the factory folder for a while.  As you mentioned, wrap it with paracord, pipe insulation, etc.  A buttstock pad if you want to extend LOP -- the recoil isn't enough that you need cushioning.  A cheek riser if it suits you.

The factory folder is a very stout, very well designed system.  Since the mechanism is designed to be tight to prevent wobble when extended, be sure that when you're folding/unfolding the stock that you don't put any vertical pressure on the bar itself with your fingers or thumb.  Even the lightest touch is magnified by force of lever and will cause the button to bind.  Rest your thumb on the receiver cover instead.

The major problem with some of the folders from Century is that the new coating and/or old rust makes the release button bind.  One of mine I had to replace as I stripped out the nut by folding and unfolding.  Another I took apart and cleaned, lubed, and reassembled with blue loctite.  The last I just flushed repeatedly with a solvent.  All three work without a problem.  If you need spare hinge parts, I believe that Ohio Ordnance still has them for very reasonable prices.  Just be sure to ask them to ship it US post to save the Fed Ex charges.

Unless you just want to spend money, the factory folder will probably serve you well.

Thanks.  Some interesting options in those photos.  But I didn't see what I want to do.  I know it will install, as I've seen one picture already where someone had the setup I want.  But will a standard AR stock, such as the CTR, still allow the VZ2008 to function when it's folded?  I just think the AR stock with the tall cheek piece (that lines it up with the top of the receiver) looks right.  Most of the stocks have a lot of drop from the line of the receiver, and I don't like that downward angle.  If your scope is mounted a bit high, it seems you would need a tall check piece to line up with the optic.  Of course, that all depends on the optic you use, and the optic mount.

I will shoot it with the factory folder, for sure.  With some thick rubber pipe insulation added.  Maybe I will like it as is.  It certainly will be cheaper if I do!

Do some of the stock adapters angle downward, while others come 90d off the back of the receiver?

Angle is required for irons.  Straight is better for high mount optics.

Take a look at Stormwerkz and Czechpoint as originally mentioned to answer your questions...

All the adapters I saw on Stormworkz said they do not fit the VZ2008.  The one on Czechpoint said it may or may not have fitting issues with the VZ2008.  Plus, the Czechpoint one says it has some downward angle.  I want a straight one, no angle.  So is there any way to easily modify one of the Stormworkz straight adapters to fit the VZ2008?

VZ2008s stock screw holes migrate up and down w/in 1/4" or so...  So if the Stormwerkz has the protrusions to fit rear receiver grooves, you may need to modify/file the adapter to fit, but that should be the only possible issue.

I made this today.  It is a simple leather sleeve laced around pipe insulation.  It is comfortable and provides me with a perfect cheek weld.  Next, I will stack some leather on the butt for extra padding and LOP.  I think the folder is a keeper.

Best,
Malcolm

Best,

That leather sleeve is unique an IMO looks sweet!  Good job on that one.

DanielBoone, I'll let you know if I switch it out.  But I put the pipe insulation on it today, and I must say it worked pretty well.  But I I won't really know until I get some wrap on it and decide on an optic.

Is that your real name??  If yes, we may be related!
