Joined the club. New 97B on the way. Got a question.
« on: December 04, 2015, 06:30:20 AM »
I have learned that this gun is coming with a plastic guide rod. I hate plastic in a gun, and it came close to causing me to pass on this one. Does anyone know where I can buy a steel guide rod for this gun? I just want a drop in part. Not interested in anything that needs gunsmithing etc... I have seen many recommend purchasing one from Steve Bedair. Unfortunately, it seems that he is deceased. I have also seen reference to one that is available from a guy named Jack Ash, but any link that I find to him is dead. He seems to be missing these days.

Thanks in advance for any assistance that you can give me.

I think it would be worth your time to give Cajun Gun Works a call and talk to them about metal guide rods in the 97 series.

Thanks amigo. I have discovered that the CZ Custom Shop in AZ has them, and Cajun is getting some in soon. I guess I will be able to get rid of this plastic part. Ughhh.... I hate plastic on guns.

It is interesting to note that Cajun told me that they are going to get some in soon (stainless steel) and will sell them, but do not recommend replacing the plastic guide rod. They say that it plays an important role in buffering the slide. Stainless steel won't do that.

I don't care. The plastic is going. If I break the gun, I will buy a new one. I hate plastic that much.  ;D

This is why I referred you to call them... I have the SS Guide Rods in my P01 and SP01. They are externally visible on these pistols and I prefer the look. On the 97 the GR cannot be seen. I went with CGW's advice on the 97.

Can't see the guide rod in a 97? Mine is clearly visible from the front although with the slide retracted the full length dust cover hides it from the side view. I prefer steel guide rods in my pistols as well and my 97 has had one of Steve Bedairs' guide rods in it for over 6k rnds now without issue or noticeable wear. CGW will be stocking some soon and will be selling those parts and if it was really a big issue as far as wear or damage I doubt they would sell them at all.

I understand, you want what you want. I'm sure the SS will work fine too.
I guess the "Polymer" GR on my 97 is on the short side.
