TriStar P-120 and SP-01 Comparison (Pic Heavy)
« on: January 17, 2015, 12:04:27 AM »
I picked up my TriStar P-120 almost 2 weeks ago and went to the range immediately. I was shooting with a few friends so I didn't have a chance to even clean it, much more determine it's accuracy. 200 rounds through the pipe with my practice ammo all went bang without any failure. I couldn't remember how heavy or bad my SP-01's trigger was, but I didn't think the P-120 was any better. DA on the P-120 was heavy and I thought was heavier than the SP-01. Anyway, here are some photos comparing the two, side by side.

P-120 and SP-01. P-120 sporting the rubber grips from SP-01

The serrated portion is thinner on the P-120. Dots on the sights are small.

Beaver tail is shorter. I feel a tiny bit of hammer bite when shooting the P-120

P-120 has a thicker steel guide rod. Barrel is thinner than the SP-01's

I've read that the internals of P-120 is nicer than SP-01's, but I don't think that's the case with mine. Comparing the internals of my SP-01 with what I see in this forum, mine seems to be a lot more polished. I don't see any tool marks on the side of the trigger bar like what I see in some threads here.

Sorry, this gun just came back from the range, hence why it was dirty.

Field stripped

Range Report:
The P-120 is pretty accurate for what it is. I shot 10 rounds at rest from 11 yards (in red circles). I was satisfied so I shot the rest offhand, fast paced. I'm no sharpshooter, so don't mind the flyers

My Take:
I like the P-120 a lot and have 0 regret buying it, especially for what I paid for it. It's a nice, accurate gun. Saying it is equal to SP-01 is stretching it though, much more saying It is better. My P-120 will not replace my SP-01 but it will see the range often. They look similar, but they behave differently. The triggers and the way the hammer breaks have distinct feel. There's a bit of a play on the P-120's slide, which the SP-01 don't have, or at least very, very, minimal. I like the SP-01 better as it is more refined.

Gratz on the new pistol.

Thank you for the comparison wright up and pictures. First time i have seen them side by side.

It looks like the FBP lifter arm on the P-120 is notched into the sear. Are they inter locked so they only move at the same time or dose the lifter rotate independently like the SP-01?

Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

Thanks for sharing and the pics.  I don't own an SP01 but when I got my P120 it looked to me that Canik was definitely trying to at least mimic the looks of the SP01.  Seeing them side by side like this reinforces this for me.  I have the black cerakoted one, and hadn't seen the "chrome" one, I like it.  Thanks again.

Great comparison pics! I don't think I've seen the two side by side either. Congrats on the new pistol.

Thanks, y'all

They move as a single unit. Both the lifter arm and the sear leg will make the sear rotate when pushed.

I polished the action and it did improve a bit. It was smooth right off the bat but I wanted to lighten the DA quite a bit. I have CGW's SPGK1 installed. It's not where I want it yet.

I think that's what they're going after, although the slide is closer to P-07/09 but the overall look is SP-01. Even the inside and the rails are cerakoted. Hopefully, it doesn't add more play as the coating thins out.

It looks to me....

...as your front sight blade is offset to the left, just like mine. Mine has been machined .021 off centerline to the barrel bushing. Prior to adjusting the rear sight, mine was shooting left also (at ten yards). Also, I can't remove the slide with my hammer cocked. WAY too much tension on the trigger bar. BTW, does your barrel bushing appear to have excessive clearance to the barrel?

Considering the ribbing/serrations, it does look that way, but I'm also seeing more sight base on the left. It may just be the ribbing, but I'll have to do some measuring to confirm.

Regarding barrel bushing clearance, with the slide forward, the clearance is just a tad bit more than the SP-01 but I wouldn't call it excessive. It feels tight. With slide locked back, it does move quite a bit, but not any more than the SP-01.

I did some measuring and the front sight is dead center. It's just the ribbing that makes it look like it's off-center. The rear sight, however, is off-center. Anyway, I'm planning to put an EZ/D-9 to my SP-01, so the P-120 will inherit the TruDot rear and FO front.

I also bought a pair of red cheese graters, err, grips. I love the feel of these grips, but not sure which gun will wear what. I've always like the Red-Black combination, but the Red-Chrome isn't bad either.

Great pics. I like the red on the SP-01, white on the P-120 better. The red on the SP-01 matches its FO front sight.

Good looking grips either way.

Very nice.  Love those grips.  How much did you pay for them?  I can't find them for a decent price.

Thanks. That's what I'm leaning towards too.

$85 + S&H at CZ-USA. it's expensive for what they are, but I like it so much.

BTW, I think it was your video, or somebody else's, that fitted VZ grips on their P-120.  These just dropped right in without hand fitting.

I had to fit some on a t120, but the ones I have on my p120 are wood grips from Thailand that only required a little. I may have to get some of these though. I really like them.
