Surplus 9mm ammo question VPT 44
« on: March 30, 2020, 04:51:51 PM »
Good Day,
I was shooting some 9mm surplus from my BIL's stash in my P-09, the boxes showed it was sold by InterArms, 25 to a box, and advertised non corrosive. The head stamp is VPT 44. :o (Finland) It all functioned 100%. The bullets attract a magnet although not a lot. Is it really non corrosive? Any other problems of note? I did cleaning precautions for corrosive ammo just in case, lots of rinsing with hot water followed by Hoppe's #9 and then protective lube.
Thanks,
Rob

I had some surplus 7.62X25 years ago that was advertised as non-corrosive and that was not the case at all. I think I'd not be worried about shooting the ammo but I'd continue to clean as though it was corrosive.

SVPP gave you a really good answer. Basically, "trust but verify".

I might go one step further... I'd take apart one of the cartridges and then dissect a bullet. I'd want to know is the ferrous part in the jacket, or is it a slug in the interior used for simple weight ?

Then you might find some tests on-line that could help you verify as to the corrosive nature of the powder and primer.

In God we trust; On 'Starting Load' we rely.
