Peep for vz2008
« on: February 01, 2015, 12:14:12 PM »
Hi guys,
This is just an fyi  for all of you peep lovers.  I have struggled with the sights on my VZ for about a year now. first the original sights and later a peep sight that replaces the original sights and is located in the same place.  I disliked both of them.  I recently found a sight by Skinner Sights called the LoPro and talked my gunsmith into mounting it . Picked it up yesterday and it definitely looks like it will work well.

Explanation:  There is a block of steel under the receiver cover that holds the recoil spring (s) in place.   This block of steel is held in place by 3 rivets ( two in the rear and one on top).  I asked my gunsmith to drill out the top rivet and tap it for the appropriate thread to fit the LoPro peep sight( 8-40, I think).

That's it.........it seems like a very solid mount. The only change is that the steel block is now held in place by two rivets and a steel screw ( instead of three rivets).  It looks like it will work quite well.  All adjustments will need to be at the front sight ( I can live with that).

I admit that it is not nearly  as "bullet proof" as the original sights , but I'm not expecting to take this into battle. I  expect that the most vicious thing that I might shoot , would be some angry pop cans.

Cost of the sight was about 45 bucks plus the cost a gunsmith drilling and tapping one hole...that's it.   I haven't shot it yet and don't have it sighted in , but we did a casual boresighting and it's already close, so it should be simple to sight in.

   Hot Dog !!  :D   mike

It would be interesting to see this, I bet it works well.  Skinner sights are very popular with Marlin/Winchester lever users and seem well made.

I ordered the Mojo Sights so I'm anxious to see how they work (Vz. 58 sight is at the bottom of the linked page). It's just an adjustable rear peep sight that replaces the factory rear sight. No gunsmithing required. They also have three different aperture sizes available via inserts

The center sight in the image below is the view.

CZ: CZ-83 (.32 ACP) • CZ-75BD Police  •  Vz. 58 [VZ2008]
Handguns: Beretta 21A Bobcat  • Ruger 22/45 Mark III
Long Guns: Mosin-Nagant 91/30 x 2 (1939/1944) • Mossberg 183 (.410 bore) • Remington 870 Express (20 gauge) • Ruger 10/22 • Ruger Mini-14 (5.56x45mm)

Search this forum for mojo.  Some members have reported they do not properly align.

Also, the rear is a ghost ring sight, not a peep in the truest sense...

Search youtube for snap shooting -- that's what they were designed for.

What I like about peep/ghost ring sights is that there is no need to align the front and rear sights -- the eye does it naturally.  Ignore the rear sight and shoot.  I didn't know about this phenomenon until recently and find it fascinating.  It takes a bit of "faith" at first, but works extremely well.

Target acquisition is extremely fast, especially for moving ones.  It's comparable to a red dot -- not quite as fast -- but there are no batteries or top protrusion to worry about.  Very robust and durable.  Admittedly, there is a slight trade off for accuracy, although for the 25 - 200 yard practical range of iron sights, it's negligible.

A peep/ghost ring sight is more effective when the dark blade front sight is made more visible.  It needs to stand out to help the eye find and align it naturally with the rear sight.  Fiber optic front sights are good, but I've have success with a dab of orange or bright green nail polish.

I have peeps on two of my other rifles.  One for the VZ2008 would be great.  I'm looking forward to range reports from mike28w and autoris regarding the Skinner and Mojo sights.

@TJ,

I'm still waiting on PSA to ship my rifle, so it will probably be a few weeks before I can report back. But I will report when I get it.

Hi guys !

Finally got the chance to shoot and sight in my VZ2008 with my new peep sights....They are going to work great for me.  The peep is at the right height for me ( at the rear)  and  the front sight is easy to adjust for windage and elevation.

Only complaint is that the set screw ( actually more of a set nut) vibrated loose.....I haven't decided whether to use blue or red Locktite.

This makes the gun much easier to shoot.  I also believe that it lets me shoot more accurately but this is more theory than fact , as I could only shoot at 25 yards....all shots touching !! :D
