Popular models and their clones
« on: February 08, 2015, 11:59:28 PM »
I'm a fan of all-metal 9mm semi-autos, and I'm slowly accumulating my share of these. I have a CZ 75 (pre B), a Beretta 92FS, a Star Super B, a couple Chinese Toks (T-54, not the more common 213), a FEG HP clone (the true HP clone, not the similar-but-different model)... and a handful of 9 Mak-caliber from surplus.

I got all of these at what I think was fair prices (all at or below $300, most at/below $200); and it's made me wonder a bit. Usually, if you like a particular pistol, you have reasonable options.

With CZ's, you come across the occasional surplus, and there's a ton of good clones to pick from; some are even more expensive (Sphinx for example).

Berettas are floating about (as seen from the current 92S pistols now available), and then you have Taurus and the occasional Turkish clone.

We see runs of real Hi-Powers a lot, FEG made exact clones, Kareen is very close, Arcus has something too.

What about SIG? The P226 is on my bucket list, but the market is way too pricey still; used guns get CPO'd and run for a high price. And then there is the conspicuous absence of any clones; I'd looked at the Zastava (CZ99), but reviews state it is more an external, cosmetic appearance, and is mechanically much different. Doesn't anyone (other than the Chinese) make a knock-off? Aren't there any surplus'd pistols that are worn in, but still good shooters? Just seems odd; as I said, I'd like one- but not at that price point.

I can't help you with clones and agree the price point is high. But, my son just took delivery of a 226 and it is worth the investment. A great pistol. And as its on your bucket list, this may be one time to treat yourself to the original. Shooting it may well make you forget about the entry fee.

You can't compare a Canik with a Sig, but I sure do enjoy my L-120. Super accurate.

I believe CDNN has used Sig 226 on sale for $399 in 40S&W and 357sig.  You could get a conversion barrel in 9mm

I think the Zastavas are the closest thing to a Sig clone. Others share some resemblance, but even less design. Nothing is going to fit Sig parts that I know of. If you want a Sig for a fair price, there are tons on the used market. 226/228/229 in the their most generic forms can be had for 500-600 on the used market where I live. I've seen trade-ins, sometimes even refinished and/or with new replacement parts installed for 400-500. And if you don't mind the Sig Pro (polymer) version, they can often be found for great prices. A little while ago, multiple people were selling them with night sights, brand new, for $399.

It may have to do with patents. The common clones 'clone' platforms don't have any worries of infringing upon original patents or otherwise facing legal action. 1911's, CZ's, ect.

FN may still have some authority with the High-Power, maybe? I'm not sure, but I'm surprised there aren't more direct copies. The only ones I've encountered regularly are Argentinian.

Sig probably has active patents. Someone may get away with making a knockoff somewhere, but importing into the US could be a different story. Alternatively, it could just be that Sigs are not exactly the simplest designs, so people are just not inclined to copy them when they could instead lift design features from more simplified platforms. I'd bet these same two things are why you don't see unlicenced H&K clones (other than the SAR ST10, which I was surprised never garnered any reaction).

I had a German sig 226 with the stampings on top of the barrel. not the USA 226. My cz out shot the sig! With factory fed,win and my reloads! The CZ75b is more accurate than my sigs! I had a 229 also and my 40 call CZ out shot that one too! I have 2 CZs 9mm stainless and 40 polycoat. I put on layaway a 75bd. I want a 75 sa and omega too! CZs are addicting!
