Then let's talk about AKs.

Kidding...
Back to the original point -- short stroke piston ARs (especially those in 300 BLK) are just wannabe VZ58s but with some advantages/trade offs... Their main advantages are that they can run a better trigger and barrels are more easily changed... Bigger accessory market too I suppose... And piston systems usually vent gases forward moreso than under the handguards... Overall, I prefer the AR in 5.56 to the VZ58 in the same -- a large part due to the polymer magwell adapter for VZ58s and the standard polymer CSA mags that I don't believe to be superior to ARs...
VZ58s have gotten the mags right from the start in 7.62x39 (vs ARs only the last decade), have more durable pistons, and generally run better for longer than ARs. Big one -- they were built in 7.62x39 so are 30% to 50% cheaper to feed (depending on how you want to do the math) than anything in 5.56. But when you burn out our barrel or need to configure for ambi use, there are definitely more challenges with the VZ58... VZ58s are also pretty much just a carbine, whereas ARs, including piston, can be configured as rifles...
Anyhow, food for thought.
Maybe that's it -- some .308 or 7.62x54R type of DMR gun coming from CSA. That'd be cool too. If only the bulk of 7.62x54R we get so cheap in the states were the DMR loads and not the standard machine gun loadings...
