New P09, some parts, and a range report
« on: March 11, 2015, 09:06:29 PM »
My new p09 came in yesterday. I had CZ custom sights (h-tac black rear and fiber optic front) and the CZ custom hammer waiting on the pistol. I was planning to shoot it stock before any mods, but when I lost a luminescent sight dot from the rear stock sight within a couple hours of fondling and cleaning, I figured what the hell. So I installed the new sights and the CZ custom hammer.

I went with the CZ custom hammer over the CGW due to the stock appearance, and I was curious if there was any difference in how much improvement one offers over the other. However, that is not a fair comparison since my two Cajun hammers are for traditional CZs, and I think you get more benefit from CGW hammers in traditional CZs than you do with the omega.

The sights and hammer were both easy mods (thanks Joe).

The p09 handles great and reloads are VERY fast! I started with 3 and 7 yard warm ups just trying to get a feel for the pistol. I wasn't sure if I had the rear sight centered well enough, but it looks like I have it pretty darn close. I'll loctite it after one more range session. I did notice that it shoots just a bit high compared to most of my other pistols (mainly SIGs, but those are designed for a combat hold), this pistol required a 6'oclock hold, and that is my preference.

After getting a feel for the pistol I was able to hit 500 ml water bottles from 30 yards fairly regularly if I focused. I also hit 3 out of 5 on a sheet of paper at 100 yards (that is not an indication of my abilities, I'm usually able to hit a 24"*18" gong at 100 yards, but that is a much larger target.

To say I am impressed is an understatement. This is a fast handling tack driving machine that can be had for under $500!!

It ate ~300 rounds this evening - about 250 147 gr reloads and most of a box of 9bple. No malfs, and the p09 handles the hot 9bple very well. I was worried the spring was too stiff for my reloads, but it functioned fine.

My only complaint is that I wish the double action was less stagie and the single action had a better defined wall before the break. I may check out some more custom options at CGW to see if David thinks I can improve on those aspects.

I think I need a p07 with night sights to keep the p09 company :-)

Nice!  I plan on picking up a P-09 very soon for the very reasons you listed.

My P-07 shoots great but I think I can squeeze a little more out of a P-09.  I'm planning on the FDE model.

I would have jumped all over the fde, but I am glad I got the standard black model. I would've been hesitant to replace the night sights that come on the fde model, and I really wanted this to be outfitted with fiber optic front and black rear.

If/when I snag a p07 it will definitely get night sights.

This is a fantastic pistol!

^^ Gratz on the P-09! I am in the same boat, i got the FDE P-09. I would rather have comp sights but i do not want to remove the stock night sights. At least the sight picture on the P series night sights is better than the CZ75 night sights.
Will work for CZ pics! (including but not limited to all CZ clones)

Try the CGW heavy sear spring. That should give you a more defined wall before the break. I'm running the CZC comp hammer in my P-07 as well.

CGW can help with the stacking double action too. CGW can improve the SA pull and also have a kit to shorten the trigger reset.

If you don't like the stiff recoil spring, I think lighter recoil springs and stainless guide rods are available from CGW.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I did use the heavy CZC sear spring in the install. It helps, but I think I am just spoiled by CZ 75B triggers (with CGW Race hammer, sear, and DA SD kit) and my Sig triggers. Gotta love the very crisp trigger found on stock Sigs, and CZ 75B upgrades make a world of difference!

That said, I shoot the P09 great, and the DA and SA trigger weights are both in the lightweight category which makes it easier to shoot without disrupting the front sight. In fact I don't want the SA to be ANY lighter than it is. I am going to put some more rounds down range before I make any other changes. I know I will at least end up with the CGW DA kit and short reset kit down the road.

I can say from experience, that stock CZs can be shot and shot VERY well without any trigger mods. I think I get more out of the sight change than I do the action modifications; however, I enjoy to tinker with it, and I want to squeeze that last little bit of performance out of this beast!

The CZC heavy sear spring and the CGW heavy sear spring are completely different. I swapped out the CZC spring for the CGW sear spring. Noticeable improvement with definition and wall before break. I would say on par with my Walther PPQ... which is amazing.

Try the CGW sear spring, I think it's exactly what you may be looking for. Give David at CGW a call or email, for some reason he doesn't list it (or I can't find it) on the CGW web sight.

Blue9--I think I posted a similarly enthusiastic report a year and a half ago.  I am not sure what it is about the P-09 that allows everyone to shoot them so well compared to their other guns.  Mechanically, they are excellent, but it's more than that.  Perhaps the combination of the short reach to the trigger and the low bore axis?  Whatever it is, its all good.

The trigger is not going to be as crisp as the 75, even with the CGW parts, I don't think.  Close, but not quite the same.  I've shot mine so much in single action that I don't even remember what the double action feels like, but it isn't bad at all with the CGW parts.  Still some stacking from what I remember.  Overall, I became very comfortable with the feel of the CGW parts, but it took a while, and I was always shooting an equal number of rounds through the CGW equipped Kadet during each range session so I was comparing the guns twice/wk.

There are no bad P-09's!  I love reading these reports.

I'm going to try the CGW xheavy sear spring and see how that goes.

I'll be putting another 500 rounds through it this weekend. This has taken the number one spot of pistols I'd recommend to folks in the sub $800 category (followed by Sig sp2022, used p226/9, and the 75B). Even once you get to the higher end Sigs and HKs, I still think this is just as fine a weapon, and it simply becomes preference at that point.

What a home run by cz

I have the X-Heavy CGW sear spring in both of my P-09's.  That spring definitely makes the SA wall more defined.

I have added the excellent CGW reduced power Trigger Return Spring to both P-09's, and now I am craving a bit more of a wall on the SA pull.

I could have sworn I saw David mention an even heavier CGW sear spring - heavier than the X-Heavy he sells... but I can't seem to find the thread where he mentioned that.

Have any of you tried one of these "XX-Heavy" sear springs from CGW?

I put in the CGW reset kit, hammer, hammer spring, stainless guide rod and 18 lb recoil spring. And especially--most importantly--the extra strong sear spring.

Prior to putting in the extra strength sear spring, my P-07 would fire two shots with a single pull of the trigger :o

After putting in the extra strength sear spring, it has been flawless now for about 800 rounds.
