Defective extended FP or FPB?
« on: March 04, 2015, 01:49:03 AM »
Installed a CGW extended FP last night.  Dry fire with snap cap no problems.  Dry fire with no snap cap and the FP gets stuck in the forward position.  Have to take slide off and hit the protruding FP to get it to go back.  Is this normal?  If not how can this be remedied?  Might it be the FPB?

TIA.

My guess - your firing pin - restraining pin is installed incorrectly or the firing pin spring broke for some reason.  You have to position the firing pin in a certain way to install the restraining pin correctly.  Only way to find out is to remove the firing pin and check - should be a minute to do.

I've heard of a couple of firing pin channels that were out of wack. They had to use a drill bit and ream them a little.
I would call CGW. They'll be able to help you out.
Did you also install the reduced power FP spring? And the CGW FP retaining pin? Maybe reinstall and make sure the FP channel is clean?

Make sure the FP spring was reinstalled.

Take the firing pin and spring out again. Make sure the flat side of the Extended firing pin is positioned correctly when you reinsert it. It must be facing the right way (consult instructions)

Also make sure the firing pin block plunger can move up and down and is working before you put the roll pin back in. Then do your pencil test and make sure the firing pin block is engaging and blocking the hammer when the trigger isn't depressed.

If the firing pin still prodrudes after the trigger returns, it is not supposed to do that and makes the pistol unsafe to shoot because you could have full auto fire.

Flat part of the firing pin should be facing up.

Well, I did everything imaginable to get this extended FP to work to no avail.  Same problem.  As a last resort I reinstalled the stock FP.  Works like a charm.  No problems whatsoever.  I'll be bleeped.

Will call CGW tomorrow.

Thanks everyone.  This is a helluva forum.  Much more helpful and civil than many of the other gun forums out there.

When you installed the firing pin retaining pin, did you push forward on the firing pin to ensure that the slot for the firing pin retaining pin was clear?  If not, you may have buggered the pin slightly, causing it to stick.

Like the above poster suggested it might have been the FP retaining pin.

I remember reading that I had to be sure that the "flat" of the extended FP had to be pointed up when correctly installed.  It always was.  But at work today I had an epiphany about the orientation of the retaining pin in correlation to FP.  I took the firing retaining pin out and oriented it so the split on the retaining pin faced opposite of the " flat" on the FP.

I also slipped a small "pipe cleaner" soaked with Hoppes down the FP channel which removed a very small dab of a cosmoline like substance.

Maybe the FP was getting snagged by the retaining pin, getting stuck by the gooey substance, or a combination of the two.  Hell if I know.

Anyhow, I put a box of 115 gr. Federal ball through with a 13# HS installed and it ran like a champ.  Aside from some of the troubles I think this CZ is a keeper!

Thanks to all that helped!
