Steel Guide Rod for CZ85 Combat
« on: March 31, 2015, 05:26:35 PM »
I know that the poly guide rod that came in my CZ 85 Combat works just fine, but is there any reason other than that not to use one of these in a CZ85 Combat?

I know and expected that answer, but couldn't figure out how to word the question to avoid it  :D

Is there any functional reason it won't work or that I shouldn't use one of these guide rods in my CZ 85 Combat?

I like a guy with a sense of humor. ;D

I can't think of any reason it wouldn't work or any reason not to use it. I just don't see any benefit if the plastic one is working.

I have the plastic one in mine and it guides the spring...like it's supposed to.

The slide of a 75/85 needs to have a hole drilled at the end to accommodate the full length guide rod when the slide is cycling or locked back. So it entails more than just installing the guide rod.

Edit: OP is asking about a short guide rod, due to this the above comment is inaccurate.

The guide rod he linked to isn't a full length unit as far as I could tell.

Thank you for the clarification painter. I did not even consider that it was a short metal guide rod GaryC was asking about. First time i have seen this come up.

I just got a reply to my email to CZ-USA about this and according to Adam @ CZ the steel guide rod will work in an 85 Combat.  I figured by its similarity (appearance and description) to the poly guide rod (RECOIL SPRING GUIDE POLY 75 9MM Product Number: 0420051002) that is shown next to on the web site it that it would fit, but was just looking for some "street smart" info on the subject.  Does anyone know why they list both a steel part and a poly part for the CZ75?  Maybe because earlier versions of these pistols came with steel rather than poly guide rods?  Maybe different variants come with poly and others steel?  Regardless, thanks for the replies and for being nice to a CZ n00b :)

My CZ75BD came with the short metal guide rod, while my 85B, and 85 Combat came with the polymer guide rod. I prefer the polymer for two reasons. First the plastic guide rod wares better. Second my recoil springs tend to get stuck on the metal guide rod and have to be twisted and pulled off. The metal guide rod is also louder in operation, i can sometimes hear it rubbing the spring when i shoot my 75BD.

CZ85B is 2013 - Poly
CZ85 Combat is 2014 - Poly
CZ75BD is 2014 - Metal

In the end both will work fine.

New guy on the block.  Retired Marine Master Guns who has been around the block a few times.
On polymer frame pistols, I always slap a steel or titanium guide rod in to replace the polymer. Reasoning behind it is to add some weight and let you acquire that bad boy back on target a little quicker.
With the CZ metal platforms, weight is not an issue, but I put the bleep metal ones in my CZs also.   No reason other than me being me and just something to play and fumble around with.  I am new to the CZ world, I have a PCR and an 85 Combat.  I absolutely love them.   My PCR has been jazzed up with some Cajun and Angus goodies.   It is now my EDC.   I already have a battle plan for my next 4 CZ purchases.  The finale is going to be a Scorpion

You might want to go back to polymer on your PCR's guide rod. A steel rod on an alloy frame can cause some peening down the road.
