folding stock cheek weld solution

Hello,

I've have a vz2008 and in a recent effort to make the cheek weld better, I wrapped the stock in a magazine and then paracord. It made a great difference in my shooting but it would not allow me to fold the stock, so I took it off. Now I am looking for a new cheek weld solution without having to invest in a new stock.


I know of AMD65Tech cheek risers but I haven't head the best reviews, as well as the foam insulation trick but it looks super gettoh.
Recently I've seen this on this on the internet and wondered if it was a one off thing or if anyone else has seen this, I think this is a MUCH more attractive and functional design:

The wooden check piece in the other photo is custom to that rifle. That rifle is a de-mil'd rifle BTW.

I figured that was a custom part for that rifle. I just wanted to run it by you guys before I started making one myself.

If you have a table saw I think it would be pretty easy to mill out a channel of a 2x4 and sand one side for a nice smooth cheek weld?

Anyway, yeah. I'll probably try the foam insulation, does it let your stock close without putting stress on the folding pin? I'm mostly just looking for a firmer cheek weld, that lets me be more consistent with my red dot. With that UTG AK-47 butt pad and the czech muzzle break the recoil isn't bad at all, very comfortable actually, but because the red dot is up a little higher, I have to sort of hover above the wire stock...

Yeah, it closes fine. I recently redid it and when I wrapped it I compressed the foam a lot less, which left it at around twice the diameter as in those photos and it still closes without strain. Depending on how much you compress it while wrapping, you could get a range of height for your cheek weld. I had thought before that you could even add another half pipe to the top for height, before wrapping.

Take the pipe insulation and cut out a lengthwise piece of about 120 degrees of the circle, making the foam instead into a "C" shape.  Position the open "C" end on the side of the folder that meets the receiver and wrap it.  That way you can use whatever thickness of insulation and wrap it as tightly or loosely as you like and it will still fold easily.  I wrapped mine first with black med tape to hold it in place, then a moderate tightness of paracord for durability.  Since it's staying on, I also lightly oiled the stock in case of moisture seeping, but that's probably overkill.

I used the rubber looking pipe insulation from Lowes.  Then wrapped it with vet tape.  It closes against the receiver easily.  But I still think I will put a P cord wrap over that, just for looks.  My only concern is if it will still close against the receiver with no problem if I add the P cord wrap.  If it doesn't, then as TJ says, I'll just rewrap the insulation again and compress it more.

Jrucker2. That actually looks pretty sharp. I think I would prefer it to run more the length of the stock, and keep it narrower over the trigger guard when folded (as I see they did). One of the good cases to get rid of the beaver barf, and go all wood. Don't know how comfortable it would be to shoot though.

I used a length of air hose tubing, sliced down the middle, and then wrapped it with 3M Scotch 23 splicing tape. It's non-adhesive, but it does stick to itself when you stretch it, and over time it forms a rather solid mass.

I was tired of the butt sliding all over my shoulder, and ended up not liking the AK buttpad as much as I thought I would. The rubber tape worked great.

I've yet to try it in the heat of summer, though. It might get sticky.

I just made a post about how I padded my stock.  It's not really a riser like some of the other images but it's 100% more comfortable.  It does add a slight amount of height but not much.  Overall I'm happy with how it turned out.
