Kind of a moot argument. All (or most, I guess) full size pistols were designed for combat originally and some more than others make good range guns. It's all about context, the all steel 1911 served for 70+ years as the US's combat pistol; all 2 1/2 lbs. of it. Rails did not come in to play till about 10 years ago or so, whether Glock, Berretta , etc. In combat the pistol is secondary to the rifle. To say the CZ75 is to heavy and lacks a rail makes it a poor combat pistol would be to say that the AK is a poor combat rifle for the same reasons.

My P-01 and RAMI are in my carry rotation and I trust my life to them on a daily basis.
My range time is to keep my skills up with these two.

If you want a "range" gun, go with a longer barrel as it's "easier" to be accurate.
Self Defense go with what you can carry comfortably and shoot accurately.
Even the little RAMI with a 3" barrel is very accurate.
There is nothing special about a Glock except that perhaps they give a large discount to law enforcement, hence the high numbers being used. There are a lot of other plastic handguns I'd pick over a glock. As it happens I have very few plastic ones left and they are all M&P's with the exception of one Walther PPS. All the rest are CZ's and 1911's.
