Upgrade my P-01 for IDPA's CCP Division!
« on: July 20, 2015, 10:25:23 PM »
When is the last time you were able to spend someone else's money?  Now is your chance!   ;D

Just picked up a new P-01 to shoot in IDPA's CCP Division next year.  It will more than likely become my EDC gun as well despite having carried my M&P Compact for the last 6 years.  Yes, I am becoming more and more addicted to the CZ platform.  With that said if you were looking to do the same what would you order for upgrades from CGW? I plan to order the parts from David and have my local gunsmith do the polishing and installation of all of the parts as he did on my SP-01 Shadow.  In the end I would like as close as I can get to a smaller version of said Shadow.

Here is what I know so far for sure...

CGW competition sights (stock P-01 sights are just terrible!)
VZ Diamondback grips
5-6 additional magazines (MecGar or CZ?)

Thanks in advance!

For me, it would all be about:

1. Good sights that I can see
2. Lightened up and smooth out the DA pull, and short reset on the SA.
3. Grips that fit my hand
4. Fine tune the recoil spring to match my load.

On mine I changed to the comp rear and FO front sight and replace pins and springs and did some polishing. It is my most often carried and will be using it in IDPA from here on (I had been using my SP-01 Shadow, but I am mounting a FastFire 3 on it).

If you really want me to spend your money,,,,, I say send it to David and ask for "the works".
SP-01 Shadow
P-01 + 40B slide = 40P

CZ 83

and some other "stuff"

Ok, I'll help spend your money. I'll add some info about me to know why I would suggest some of these items. I compete (sometimes poorly!!!) in local IDPA matches with a non-Shadow SP01 or a pre-B converted to SAO. I also own a Compact D with Rail (P01 before there was a P01). All three of these CZ's have some to a bunch of parts from CGW and CZ Custom in them.

From CGW:
SRS-2: short reset kit with the extended firing pin and spring, lifter, lifter spring, retaining pin and 11.5 lb and 13 lb hammer springs
RP-TRS: Reduced power trigger return spring
TR-PIN: Floating trigger pin
E-Z/D-9/40: EZ drift sights fiber optic front serrated black rear (my SP01 and SAO pre B have these sights)
1485/T1 or T2: Type 1 or 2 Disconnector
14-RSC: 14 pound recoil spring for the compact CZ's

and maybe the CZ Custom Comp hammer for decockers (10114), but I am not completely positive it is IDPA legal. The CGW hammers are for sure not legal in IDPA.

The hammers if legal are going to give a much crisper SA trigger pull. Stock CZ's hammers are known to have some to a lot of hammer camming which often end up having some stacking before the trigger breaks. On my Compact D the hammer was actually pretty good so I didn't change it out in my case to keep some costs down. Mine was a Israeli surplus pistol so its had some rounds through it. I was surprised at how nice the trigger was stock, but that didn't stop me from improving it.

When I get a new (to me) CZ I buy the same few parts for every one: reduced power trigger return spring, floating trigger pin, lighter hammer springs, and an extended firing pin/lighter firing pin spring. The SRS-2 takes care of the hammer springs, extended firing pin/spring plus some extras items for the firing pin block.

In my SP-01 I originally had a Type 2 disconnector that is "drop in" on the FPB equipped CZ's. I wanted the shortest reset possible so I ordered a Type 1 which has to be fit to a FPB CZ. I fitted it and it has an incredibly short reset while still keeping the FPB function. The Type 2 was then moved into the Compact D, and had to be fitted for both DA and SA reset in my case. My Compact D had a serrated trigger which I hated so it also got my pre-B stock trigger which has a little more meat on the back side where it contacts the frame. So in effect it acts as a 85C trigger with the overtravel screw that I can't adjust. It also has the SRS-2 running the 11.5 pound hammer spring, 14 lb recoil spring, trigger return spring and the floating trigger pin. I polished it up myself and installed all the parts. It has a short and crisp SA trigger pull around 3 lbs and the DA is much smoother and about 6.5 lbs.

And without a doubt don't waste your money on CZ mags. Buy the cheaper Mec-Gar mags and maybe spend some of that savings on some different base pads.

Pretty much what I did to my P-02 that I have shot in CCP, plus short reset. It is a sweet gun and I get a lot of questions on it from other shooters.

One shooter asked did I like it better than a Glock 19 and I said everyone has a Glock 19!

I don't have a gun setup for CCP division. My normal EDC is a 75 Shadow or a 4" 1911 in .45. However I thought I read that the division requirements are tiered from ESP division, which means you can do more mods to it than you can if you were setting it up for SSP. So after market hammers, milling the slide to accept different type of sights, and other mods which are externally visible are legal.

That being said, you still need to meet the size requirement as well as weight. But definitely more freedom than SSP.

Nice looking rig! I agree with BigMatt especially on buying MecGar mag. Also if you're shooting IDPA or USPSA I recommend getting some full size 16rd mags and putting SP-01 base pads on them. It will give you more purchase on the grips and more positive reloads.
