Cz52 Finish and Grip questions
« on: August 16, 2015, 09:23:57 PM »
I just recently purchased a Cz52 and have been looking for replacement grips.  I saw that in recent years a user called zeeBorg made grips for a nice price.  However, the most recent post regarding his grips is from 2008.  Does anyone know if he is still making grips? I attempted to contact him through the email address from the previous posts and private messaging on this forum, but never recieved a response.
Additionally, the gun seems to be coated in rust which I have been rubbing off for hours with Break Clean CLP and paper towels.  Is it normal for there to be this much rust on one of these guns, and what would be the cause of it?  I have only cleaned it lightly once before when I first picked it up and saw little signs of any rust.  Any response is appreciated.
Thanks

I have a 52 as well and it's not coated in rust. Sounds like the previous owner didn't take very good care of it.

It appears to only be rusting in places where I have oiled and cleaned the gun.  I don't think the oil I'm using is corroding the finish though because that doesn't seem to make much sense to me.  However, I do believe that the previous owner refinished the gun as the barrel looks brand new and the finish on the rest of it seems too glossy for a parkerized gun.  Also, there is very little holster wear.  Any thoughts? Could this just be a bad refinishing job coming off?

When I got my CZ 52 back in 1995 or 1996, it had a Parkerized phosphate finish.  It was a really cool gray with a slight greenish cast.  I really liked the look of it.  My dad reminded me that Parkerization isn't the best rust preventative, and that I should oil it, so I did.  The rag I used to apply the oil was surprisingly rusty looking on that first application.  However, further applications in months and years to come showed that no more rust was coming from the phosphate finish.

The odd thing was that the pistol started to change color.  The oil soaked into the phosphate, and after a couple of years the gray finish started to darken.  Now the color is a very dark gray, almost black.  The finish has gone from absolute non-gloss to a semi-gloss, perhaps because the oil polymerized with time and heat and oxygen.  Oh, I haven't been using cheap oil on it either... it's synthetic and very resistant to oxydization.  It's a very different look now.

Anyway, I figured you'd want to hear from someone else who had oil bring up rust.  Keep oiling it, and you'll be just fine.
