My other rifle's are M1A's. I never liked the Ar platform going back to my army days because of the gas recoil system and the inability to have a folding stock. The Bren is probably heavier because of its gas piston system and for a sbr I really want a folding stock. Compared to an M1A it's not very heavy.  I prefer .308 to .223 but I wanted one rifle that used stanag mags and more common cheaper .223. The Bren put it all together for me.

Good stuff. How do you feel about the M1A's? I have been considering picking up one of the loaded models.

Do they need any fine tuning or are they ready out of the box?

Mine have been good out of the box. My only stock one is a scout. I put the Socom 16 in a folding choate stock. My third is a 18" barreled action from Fulton armory in a sage ebr chassis.

I personally will wait until either a 308 version comes out, or a non-reciprocating option exists. Not a fan of the current stocks, hopefully the 806 eventually comes. At the least the 806 stock would be a nice option for a stock.

Based upon your criteria, I'd suggest the 5.56 VZ58 and/or the forthcoming 5.56 galil ace for consideration too...  If not dead set on 5.56, then the 7.62x39 VZ58 is a great option too...

Are they incorporating the improvements on the military version of the BREN into the civilian carbines?

+1.  The revised version is call 806 I believe... Any word if that version will be offered domestically?

Unfortunately, my guess is that they're eradicating inventory the military no longer wants to civilians for a few years before offering the improved version to us...

For me it's that I have not been fond of the AR platform since I shot an M16A1 in 1984, and HATED the way it SPROINGGED in my ear. After that, well, I am kind of a maverick on firearms, and dislike where "the crowd" goes, otherwise I'd be on GlockTalk and AR15.com. ;)

JP now offers their captured spring/gas piston system that's extremely quiet...

With quality piston ARs at half the cost, and great accuracy out of that platform whether DI or piston and all the aftermarket upgrades now available (especially in regards to reliability), it's hard for me to make the argument for cost alone for some of these 3rd gen rifles...  The gains aren't there in most cases (seems to be the same point the military makes in not changing rifle systems as well).  Definitely get the must have cool factor though.  Really interested in the 806 version that appears to be a ways off...
