New guy
« on: March 17, 2016, 03:37:14 AM »
Greetings from Chicago.

Wife and I are new to firearms (I haven't shot in over 10 years) -- I finally got her on board to start buying them and training. I don't plan on going crazy and building a large collection .. just enough for her and I to have some protection in the event shtf. Our first firearm was a custom built ar 223. The second was a Kimber Micro Bel Air 380 that she just had to have when we were shopping for some mags for the ar (this was a cool turning point .. the wife pointed inside the gun case and said I WANT!).

I'm almost finished building our second ar.

Our third addition was to be a 9mm that could take a beating -- shoot well -- and be controllable (I want her to be able to handle any firearm we have). I spent a good month researching and decided on the p07. My birthday was the other day and she bought it for me. The 3 day wait was over today -- we'll pick it up tomorrow. Which is why I'm now at this forum. Looking for advice from you experts.

As with all my toys (cars, bikes, electronics, house ammenities), I like the finer things and upgrades. My ar's are not budget builds. The p07 is more than half the price of other 9mm I've been looking at. I want to upgrade the pistol with all the things that'll make it tougher, more reliable and a pleasure to shoot.

I see cajun all over the place. Is this what I want? Do I want a package or do I need to add al la carte? Some of you mention springs, triggers, kits ... What can I do to deck out the p07?

Thanks

I forgot to mention the 4th addition will be a 1911 45. Any suggestions on a mid level (under $2k 1911)? Any wesson fans?

Welcome aboard

I have a P09 that's stock except for a fiber optic front sight. Am very happy w/ it as is & am using it effectively in IDPA.

As for a 1911, I ended up getting a SIG nightmare. Very happy with it. Was interested in a DW specialist, but found I could get 2Sigs for the price of 1 duty coated DW. If $ wasn't an issue for me, I'd strongly consider a DW & it's available for just under your 2k limit.

The fit & finish is noticeably better on the DW than the SIG & while I couldn't justify the cost, I was impressed.

I switched my recoil spring out to a 15 lb unit.  This will make it easier to rack and will help it cycle with lighter loads.  I shoot a lot of Perfecta ammo from Wal Mart.  It is decent ammo but a little under powered so I had trouble with it not wanting to cycle all of the time.

In stock form, they are a bugger to rack.  Your wife may have a little trouble with it at first.  Don't despair if it is hard to rack or doesn't cycle standard ammo until you change out the recoil spring.

They're great guns.

Hello and welcome from Nebraska. I think your CZ P-07 was a great choice. I have I stock CZ P-09 and I like it just the way it is with no upgrades.
I think the Ruger SR1911 is an excellent hand gun for around $700. The fit and finish on these Rugers is outstanding and they are extremely accurate.

Hello from the south loop! I don't own a P07 but I have upgraded my P09 with CGW parts. I loved it straight out of the box but now it's even better.

I would recommend going out and putting a bunch of rounds through the P07 and figure out what, if anything, you don't like about it and then make a decision on the upgrades available.

I think the P07 works just fine as a defense pistol with minimal parts and a little polish. The short reset kit along with a #15 hammer spring should work well and be very reliable using good ammo. Also the #15 slide spring to make things work easier.. Add the stainless guide rod.

You may not need or want the race hammer in the full kit, as they are very sensitive and may be a bit much. Although the sear cut ibn the stock hammer is a bit deep, which makes for a bit of creep, this is a non issue in a defense gun, and gives a bit more tactile feedback which is good.\\

You did ask, so I told.

A lot seem to like them Ruger SR's, although I have totally gone 9mm and no use for a WWI pistol in my range or defense use. And I have had a lot of them over time.

Awesome feedback, thanks guys.

The wife had a real hard time pulling the slide back when she first picked it up. Sounds like the recoil spring is in order. What will the stainless steel guide rod accomplish?

It also seems to have come with night sights which was a surprise to me. Are they all coming with night sights now?

Greetings South Loop -- West Loop here.

The stock pistol has a captured spring setup that you cannot get the spring off of and the new guide rod is not a captured setup so the spring can be swapped.
