Rings For Vortex Scope On 455 American
« on: July 01, 2016, 12:46:08 PM »
Anyone running a Vortex scope with a 40mm objective lens what kind of rings do you have? Also, how much clearance is there between the front bottom of the scope and the barrel?

Which Vortex?  AO or non AO?

Either the Crossfire II or Diamondback 4-12x40 w/ AO and DBC reticle.

I just went thru the specs on a lot scopes for a 452 American using medium Talley rings . max objective bell size was 52.8mm/2.077"  so most 40mm objective  fall in that range but none of the 50mm neither will the A/O models with larger than a 32mm objective  , I was looking for a side focus for that reason .
I ruled out the Vortex scope because they all seem to have 1.69" oculars , medium rings max at 38.5mm/1.52" and that depends on the eye piece shape. Weavers , Redfields, Bushnells are the ones that fit these specs .
with high or extra high rings you open up your choices considerably though , then you need to know distances between the adjustment knobs and the bell ends especially with scope bigger than 12X , I went back and settled on the Redfield 4-12x40 , love the circle X recticle on it . fits in the medium rings nice and low, and looks great too.

Nando: Now that's how a scope should be mounted! That gives you the best match possible at various ranges between your POA and your POI. The higher the mount, the greater the compensation needed when shooting at shorter distances than your points of intersection.

That means: If you sight in your rifle at 50 Yards, your bullet will cross your line of aim at about 25 yards. But if your scope is mounted extra high, you will have to aim about 2 inches high to hit a point at 15 yards. This causes some folks to miss critters if they aim right at the critter and don't compensate for it. But if your scope is mounted as low as possible (like Nando's!), you don't need to compensate your aim at shorter distances near as much. It almost becomes negligable if you remember to aim right over the spot you want to hit.
