Scorpion EVO, why 20rds magazines ?
« on: November 03, 2016, 09:34:29 PM »
Why does CZ ship the EVO with 20 rds magazine and not the 30's ? Aren't the 30's the original size for the military version ? Seems like an odd decision for them, just curious.

I think the 20s were the original standard, being a European design, but I'm not 100% certain on that.

Probably compactness for packaging...  Most pistol caliber carbines, similar to AR15s, the 20 round mags extend to a length roughly equivalent to the length of the pistol grip, whereas the 30 round mags extend further.

IIRC, Maryland and Virginia are the only states with any mag restrictions at the 20 round  threshold...

CZ-UB lists 30 round mags as standard: http://www.czub.cz/en/produkty/samopaly/cz-scorpion-evo-3-a1.html

As to Virginia & magazine capacity...  The Code of Virginia states that it is unlawful to carry a loaded semi-automatic center-fire rifle or pistol equipped with a magazine that will hold more than 20 rounds or a shotgun with a magazine that will hold more than 7 shells ?in the Cities of Alexandria, Chesapeake, Fairfax, Falls Church, Newport News, Norfolk, Richmond, or Virginia Beach or in the Counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Henrico, Loudoun, or Prince William.

Please note, it says to CARRY, not POSSESS. So if you want to CARRY a loaded rifle/pistol in these places listed (not all of VA.) it must have a 20 round or less magazine OR you must have a CHP, which allows you to carry any size magazine you choose.

As to why CZ ships with 20's - not sure, but I can carry a loaded 20 rounder in my Scorpion and still have it fit in the small backpack I use as a carry bag for it. Another advantage is it's easier to shoot from a bench rest position with the shorter 20 round mag.

Have a good weekend,

Why not?

I run nothing but 20 round mags. Maybe their thinking was anybody running 3 second drills would drive the long 30 round mag into the ground, possibly breaking it. I don't know though

I've lived in Virginia for a few years now and have read the law regarding mag capacity. It's definitely odd because it says if you use a 20 round mag, then it's just considered a rifle. BUT, if you use a 30 round mag, then it's considered an "assault" rifle. Mind you, there aren't any laws that regulate possession or use of an "assault" rifle beyond normal firearms laws.

I wonder if that means if I use a 33 round mag in my glock, that makes it an assault pistol. That would be badass!

2 things you never want to hear when you pull the trigger:

"click" when you expect it to go "bang" and

"bang" when you expect it to go "click"

I was speaking more to the fact that any weapon w/ magazine of more than 20 rounds falls under VA's "assault weapon" restrictions IIRC, as mursalot discusses as well.  But have been out of the DC area for about a decade, so a little rusty w/ the region's gun laws...

Thinking further -- it wouldn't surprise me if this was related to some customs/state dept/batf max mag capacity requirements/guidelines for mags that accompany imported pistols...  Barring AK pistols, don't see too many pistol imports with more than 20 round mags.
