Adding material to get a better fit
« on: January 17, 2017, 01:09:14 PM »
Hello,

I would like to add a small amount of material to the mainspring plug (TS Magwell). The goal is to get the magwell to seat more firmly and align with the opening reliably. This is caused by the magwell having an opening of .135 and the plug having a diameter of .11.

I think that if I could somehow add .015 - .02 of material to the back edge of the post, it will keep the magwell in the optimal alignment and prevent any movement.

1. Is this a proper solution?
2. is this something I can smear a sliver of JB-weld of Steelstik and sand down to the proper dimension?
3. What do you metallurgist do to fit a small pin in too large an opening?

It all sounded a lot funnier in my head.

If i understand your situation correctly, it sounds like you may be on the right track. Having extra material welded onto the post then filed down might be an option but this may not be necessary.  I cannot see why JB-weld or some kind of shim like a metal tube to increase the diameter of the post would not work. I am interested to hear what other forum member have to say.

Thanks,  another thought occured several minutes ago. since we're talking such a small amount. can I just add some solder (and then shape to size with file and emery board)?

I i have limited experience with solder. I wonder how it would hold up under compression, as in it might get squished. I have never seen solder used in a situation where it is compressed. Witch ever way you decide to handle it i am curious to hear the outcome.

Just a guess,
Solder is soft .  It might work for a "test",  but I doubt it would hold up for long.
" Silver solder" is stronger and might hold up longer,  but those tactical mag inserts might be a tough test..

I agree with 1SOW. Solder would be too soft. JB Weld might be the way to go. You can shape it before it hardens then sanded.

Sadly, I have to fly up north as a family member is very ill. If I am lucky, I can get back to it this weekend.

Just a dab of JB weld and it seems to have tightened up quite a bit. I did a little stoning to blend the joined edge. We'll see it how it lasts over the upcoming season. I really don't have a reason to take it apart until there is a maintenance issue. or the next deep clean.

Looking forward to seeing it work out this year.
